"Pandemic Architecture: NYC Dining Sheds 2020–2024," a new book by Penny Hardy (@psnewyork), captures the singular moment when restaurants were forced onto the streets of New York City to survive. Interiors once hidden from view were turned inside out, and the street shifted from a space of transit into a place for gathering, dining, and connection.
•
Conceived, photographed, and designed by Hardy, the book documents these structures as more than emergency shelters. They were expressions of resilience, humor, fear, ingenuity, and self-expression—a city improvising in public, restaurant by restaurant and block by block.
•
At once a visual archive, design study, and portrait of a city under pressure, Pandemic Architecture captures the moment when New York’s sidewalks and curbs became stages for survival—and when the city’s gritty, punk, DIY spirit reappeared in plain sight.

PANDEMIC ARCHITECTURE: NYC Dining Sheds 2020 - 2024 by Penny Hardy @psnewyork @pennyhardyny out Oct 13, documents a singular moment when New York City restaurants were forced onto the streets to survive. Freed, if only briefly, from conventional building regulations, restaurants transformed sidewalks and streets into a wildly varied landscape of outdoor dining structures. Owners’ personalities, tastes, fantasies, and construction skills were suddenly on full display—a return to old-school punk and DIY values. It was an unlikely experiment in building the city: improvised, unruly, and democratic - a kind of urban freedom New York had not seen in modern memory.

Two things came to mind when I saw the new 195,000-square-foot home of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning (@mitsap), in a historic warehouse building. First, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (@diller_scofidio_renfro), despite its success with ground-up commissions like The Broad in downtown Los Angeles, the Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center in Manhattan, and the Hamptons house known as Blue Dream, may be at its most creative when repurposing existing structures. Examples include the High Line, the V&A East Storehouse and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. In each case, DS+R’s architects—backstopped by the irreplaceable Ricardo Scofidio—went out of their way to make visible the most distinctive aspects of the original building, even when doing so made their job as renovators harder. DS+R would rather celebrate a problem than conceal it.

Second, the best architecture school buildings teach by example. From Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesins to the Melbourne School of Design by NADAAA and John Wardle Architects to the Clemson University College of Architecture by Thomas Phifer and Partners, they make strong statements about materials, spatial relations, and uses of light. Ideally, they give students as many ideas about architecture when they’re not in class as when they are.

COLT MANOR, now live with 1stDibs Introspective.

This project reimagines a historic Georgian house through a careful balance of preservation and intervention, retaining the character and proportion of the original architecture while introducing a quieter, more contemporary way of living.

Across the house, a sequence of distinct atmospheres unfolds; from richly detailed, intimate rooms to lighter, more open spaces, each responding to the existing structure while subtly shifting how it is experienced. Materiality, form and light are used to bridge old and new, allowing the architecture to evolve without losing its integrity.

Rather than contrast, the intention was continuity, a dialogue between past and present that feels resolved, calm and enduring.

Join @1stdibs for an exclusive first look inside the exquisite interiors of the newest project from @haldonhousedesign, a complete transformation of a historic colonial mansion on Philadelphia’s Main Line. Originally designed by Gilded Age architect Horace Trumbauer, the reimagined home balances large-scale architectural interventions with meticulous compositional layering, bringing intention to every room down to the smallest, unexpected details.

A sculptural entrance that feels both grounded and poetic •

Featured in 1stDibs Introspective for the Greenwich Village home of @grisorostudio founder Gabriela Gargano.
Photography @davidmitchellphoto A softly lit entrance featuring a curved wooden staircase with black metal balusters, a large abstract artwork in neutral tones with bold black brushstrokes, and a small sculptural side table. The space is warm and minimalist, with parquet flooring and a modern ceiling light anchoring the composition.
