Arco YWCH 2026 🇮🇹

Mille mercis! 🙏

A handful of snapshots from an amazing trip. The first ever European training camp for our youth national team in Innsbruck and Munich, followed by a Youth World Championships to remember in Helsinki. I am so proud of all our Canadian athletes who trained with us and/or competed, and I'm super proud of our coaching team for pulling it off! 🇨🇦 Back to Canada now, and excited for the future!

Guiyang, China. I was there with @cedar.pidgeon for the 2024 IFSC Youth Worlds Climbing competition in August. A delayed share, but better late than never.

China is an interesting place, the landscape is beautiful, at least what I saw. I was once told that people couldn’t see the stars in the sky above China. This isn’t true, at least from Guiyang. The streets were cleaner than in Vancouver and they had more recycling and garbage bins than Squamish will ever have. But there was a stench in the air from what I think was burning garbage near by.

I was told there were lots of security cameras. This is true. I was told the food is spicy. Also true.

Photo 5 is from the “sports school” that had a climbing wall that we went to. It was very well guarded, with police everywhere. I’m hesitant to believe it was a “sports” school when kids, around 8 and 9, were being taught military drills and had real guns to train with…

When I asked the volunteers for the event if they climbed, they responded with a “no”. When I further probed, asking why they’d volunteer for a climbing event then, they first said “because I want to serve my state”. Second, they wanted to practice their English…

Next to a large “no music” sign, older people played music in the park, while others played cards and chess. This was beautiful.

We stayed outside of the city where people dried corn in their yards and on the street. During our short stay, I saw the corn transform from corn on the cob to individual kernels and I wondered if it would make good popcorn…

The didi (taxi) drivers were very nice and didn’t want tips.

The landscape from the train was amazing. The large, green mini mountains and the limestone cliffs on their sides made me want to stay a little longer and explore.
