POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I remember walking back to my seat from the snack bar, carrying a big cup of gourmet popcorn, just as the five nominees for Songwriter of the Year were being announced.

Then came the winner: @freddie.duran .

Freddie received the 1993 Songwriter of the Year Award from the Arizona Songwriters Association. By then, he was already well known throughout the Valley, not only among his fellow musicians, but among his huge and loyal fan base. People from every walk of life loved going to a Freddie Duran show.

When Freddie was handed the award, he said:

“Wow, thank you. I’m not even a member of the Arizona Songwriters Association…but maybe I should sign up.”

He thanked the individual members of his band, and then seemed to go off script a little. Out of nowhere, during what should have been entirely his moment, he mentioned Gigi Dixon, Gary Romero, and New Destiny.

I was performing that night with Barrio Latino, and I was completely unprepared to hear my name. My reaction was physical and let’s just say I shared my entire, yet-to-be-tasted cup of popcorn with everyone sitting around me. I think some people thought it was falling from the rafters and was part of the show.

That was your moment, Freddie.

But you chose to share your spotlight. You made all of us feel lucky to be a part of it. When Freddie won, it somehow felt like we all won.

I will never forget that moment.

Thanks, Freddie. Thank you.

We’re heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved Freddie Duran, a true musical legend and a cherished member of the Poncho’s family. 💔🎶

Freddie’s voice filled our cantina with so much soul, joy, and love. Our guests adored him. Our team adored him. And he had a way of making everyone in the room feel like the music was meant just for them.

We’ll miss him more than words can say. Rest easy, Freddie. Save us a song.🙏

“Before the Next Teardrop Falls” — always, always for you.

My first independent Documentary, “CHIHUAHUITA: MEMORIES OF A LOST VILLAGE.” Is now available for streaming on YouTube. Link is in my Bio.

It captures the legacy of an almost forgotten Barrio in Alamogordo New Mexico, my home town…

Special thanks to those who continue the conversation of our Hispanic roots in Otero Country and the Tularosa Basin as a whole.
