Over the weekend, I caught up on a few shows that were closing. One of these was a top priority as it was the work of Anastasya Peña, a friend of mine who graduated from the Hunter MFA program in Spring 2025. She just had an excellent solo exhibition at Fredericks & Freiser Gallery in Chelsea called “Mood Ring”, which was the perfect name in describing her expansive fields of emotive colors that seem to wash over you with their mammoth scales.

Since meeting in 2024, I have enjoyed seeing all that she’s accomplished, which is evidenced not only in the shows she’s added to her CV (including the gallery’s participation in last year’s Armory Show), but more importantly in her growth as a painter. Speed and grace are employed in equal measure in the creative process, for Anastasya’s paintings are just as much studies in time as they are in their finished form. Oozes of acrylics motion downwards while islands of color silently glide through space, offset by feathery blends of shades that add a sense of depth or texture. One can trace movements that are calm alongside those that present a flash of rapidity.

Anastasya’s mixtures of color and painterliness of hand are what make her compositions so enticing to behold. On the one end, the gelatinous flow of amorphous forms through space in psychedelic hues reminds one of the inside of a lava lamp. They also have a curtained or zipper-like quality to them (not to be confused with Barnett Newman’s “Zip” paintings) based on the way she frames her zones of color with “zippered” edges or as if built around a veil that is revealing or concealing a dimension beyond.

Anastasya, bravissimo on a fantastic exhibition! You make the Hunter MFA community proud! ❤️🎨🎉
