Polpot in Verdon: A 55m @patrickedlinger_ testpiece from 1984. Jerry Moffat onsights, Alain free solos it in 1996. "About to execute the craziest movement I have ever done in my life. At that very moment the game is at 50/50, and im 250 meters above the ground freesoloing." writes @alainrobertofficial Those route was his last hard free solo on rock. I wonder if it ever sees another free solo ascent. I'm definitely not going for it. 😁 I tried the method of the free solo ascent and couldn't do it. Grade wise it depends lots on your reach+span and so its ~7c+/8a in Verdon style with pour feet if you are the size of Alain. Old-school grading is 7c without being polished... Anyway, well done my friend that you kept it all together in that insecure crux! 😎 📷@olivierheimana @nicozoun26 @sun.ever1

In 2013, I also had two photos in the Illume Awards-one in the semi-final and one in the finals.now I had to wait another 13 years to come around again. It's unbelievable when you consider that over 15000 photos from all over the world were submitted! With the photo that made it to the finals, I knew right after I took it that it had potential to win a prize in a photo contest.A huge thank you goes to my friend @fredmoix (not only a very good climber but also a too photographer )for showing me this very special spot🙏thanks Fred

Our very own episode of Travel Man 48 hours in... Switzerland for our good friend @fredmoix birthday celebrations, starting off with the scenic rail journey around Lake Geneva, with a bottle of local wine for train journey juice purposes Then heading up to @lacavedeladret for a superb selection of wines from the Valais region and a chance to meet up with Didier and Thomas who we've not seen for ages Obviously there was a certain football match later on Saturday evening. Three Lions, Wonderwall!! Sunday was an awesome day with a trip up to the Aletsch Glacier and some high altitude wine drinking. Astonishing scenery and too many pictures for this post. @juliesmith3121 the surprise helicopter ride was worth it? Special thanks to @jujuairlines, our pilot for the day, absolutely brilliant. Some impromptu bird watching on the way back to Sion catching a glimpse of the migratory European bee eater. Another wine stop with Fred then onto watch another certain football match, Viva Espana Riverside drinks on Monday in Geneva before heading back home. Phew... Back to reality and ground level today but an unforgettable weekend, thanks @fredmoix

“I want it to capture not only what happened, but also why that moment mattered,” says photographer Rainer Eder (@rainer_eder), about what he looks for in compelling imagery. Eder’s photos feature in the gallery, “Cracks of the Alps” in 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 324, alongside fellow photographer Fred Moix (@fredmoix), and accompanied by an essay by Mari Salvesen (@mariaugustahs). As you can guess, the piece is about some of the best cracks in the Alps, from abandoned quarries to impossible split-like-lightning overhangs. Before photography, Eder was a painter, but once he saw a copy of 𝘈𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘮𝘶𝘴, a German alpinist magazine, the images inspired him to put down the brush and pick up the camera. Today, we chat with Eder about his journey, how he’s built relationships with some of the world’s best climbers, and his new series with Mammut about climbing on man-made waste-based landscapes.

What have SJ contributors been up to? Summit Journal writers and photographers have lives outside of the magazine, and we like to recognize what they’re working on from time to time. Here are some updates: + @oldmanmoon’s “Neon Gray,” which showcases the bouldering, buildering, community, architecture, and landscapes of the East Bay, is coming out in late spring. You can order a copy at neongraymag.com. + @coreybu competed in the @uiaa_iceclimbing World Cups this year, finishing 8th and 12th in Women’s Lead, at the Longmont and Edmonton World Cups, respectively.   + @rainer_eder was the winner of the 11th CVECPHOTO international mountain photo contest. A version of his winning photo appears in SJ 324. + @maevedunigan’s new book, “Read This To Look Cool: Essays And Overthinkings,” won’t fix you, but it will probably make you look cooler. You can pre-order on her website: maevedunigan.com. + @takeme.north received a fellowship from the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) to Report from Ukraine’s Unseen Frontlines last year.  + @nickjyardley writes about coming to America for climbing in SJ 324, but he has another passion too: fly fishing. He writes about coming to America for fishing in the spring issue of @theflyfishjournal. + This past winter, @krinshawstudios was invited to create work for The Bennington Museum in Bennington, VT for their special exhibition “Vermont Vice: Sex, Drugs, Money and Murder.”
