POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today is #WrongfulConviction Awareness Day. Earlier this year I read a children's book to a classroom of first graders. They would soon become absolutely fascinated and intrigued with the author and illustrator behind it all: #RickieSlaughter. I still remember the looks on their faces as they gazed with hopes of one day accomplishing what he has. Meanwhile, he is still hoping to accomplish #freedom. My call to action to you: research his case, get curious, ask questions, and then decide how you can take action for #justice. After all, when is enough, truly #enough?

Today is Wrongful Conviction Day... Let's all take a moment to understand how so many people are easily trapped into the system. By the very people who are supposed to have our best interest at heart. My brother is another prime example of how the system gets it wrong, especially within our black and brown community. We will always be looked at as a threat. Let's stop turning a blind eye to injustice. At last week’s Freedom Festival, Athar Haseebullah called out politicians for remaining silent about the Rickie Slaughter case.

Haseebullah, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, said candidates could make freeing Slaughter part of their campaign if they had the courage. He also said politicians’ continued focus on President Donald Trump keeps local issues from receiving the attention they deserve.

The festival was hosted by several community organizations, including Mass Liberation Project Nevada, More Than A Hashtag, Service Employees International Union and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada.

🚨 22+ YEARS BEHIND BARS — AND A FEDERAL COURT FOUND THE JURY DIDN’T GET CRITICAL EVIDENCE.

Rickie Slaughter has spent more than two decades incarcerated. On March 3, 2026, U.S. District Judge Anne R. Traum vacated his conviction and ordered a new trial after finding constitutional violations involving evidence that should have been disclosed to his defense.

One of the most troubling issues involved eyewitness identification.

In the first photo lineup, 4 of 7 witnesses identified Rickie. His photograph had a noticeably lighter background than the others.

Police later conducted a second lineup where Rickie’s photograph was presented with lighting and a background consistent with the other photos.

Not one of the seven witnesses told the detective they recognized Rickie.

The federal court called that fact “of paramount importance.”

The court also found that evidence concerning the timing of the 911 call—which could have strengthened Rickie’s alibi—was not disclosed to his defense.

And there was no DNA, hair, fingerprint evidence or confession tying Rickie to the crime.

After reviewing the evidence collectively, Judge Traum concluded there was a reasonable probability of a different outcome had the suppressed evidence been disclosed.

Yet Rickie is still incarcerated.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office disputes the federal court’s conclusions and has chosen to retry the case. The current federal deadline for that retrial is March 29, 2027.

This is bigger than one man. Brady protections exist because no person should lose decades of their life while evidence favorable to their defense remains outside the jury’s consideration.

Rickie’s story deserves to be seen.

Under the US Constitution, the government and prosecutors are obligated to share favorable information about an accused person to avoid putting innocent people behind bars. Not doing so is a Brady violation, established by the US Supreme Court in 1963.

At last week’s Freedom Festival community organizers, prison abolitionists and civil rights advocates called out Brady violations by law enforcement during Rickie Slaughter’s 2009 trial.

This comes after a ruling issued in early March by US District Court Judge Anne R. Traum concluded that a reasonable jury could have reached a different verdict had critical information been disclosed at Slaughter’s trial.

Central to that finding were issues with witness identification.

North Las Vegas police showed witnesses two separate photo lineups during the 2004 investigation, both of which contained Slaughter’s mugshot. With the first lineup, four of the seven victims identified him, according to the 2011 case files. In that lineup, Slaughter’s photo was set against a noticeably brighter background than the other individuals’. When shown a second lineup without that distinction, none of the witnesses identified him.

Traum wrote that had the results of the second lineup been presented at trial, the state’s case would have been “weakened.”

Slaughter’s identity was first introduced by a confidential informant who suggested that a green car tied to the suspect resembled one Slaughter’s girlfriend drove. Prosecutors also alleged that Slaughter wore a dreadlock wig and used a Jamaican accent as a disguise. But forensic evidence tying him to the crime was lacking.

At last week’s Freedom Festival—hosted by several community organizations including Mass Liberation Project Nevada, More Than A Hashtag, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada—celebrity defense attorney Mark Geragos, who recently joined the team representing Rickie Slaughter, explained the conflicts of interest in his case.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, who represented Slaughter in 2009, filed a motion to exclude the outcome of a photographic lineup from evidence, Geragos announced.

Decades later, that motion prompted a federal judge earlier this year to overturn Slaughter’s conviction—yet Slaughter remains imprisoned as the Clark County District Attorney’s Office seeks to retry him, prompting mounting calls for his freedom.

The festival was held at the Service Employees International Union building which drew a crowd of roughly 100 people, including those formerly incarcerated from several other cities, highlighting the broad range of support for Slaughter’s freedom.

You ARE somebody. ✊🏽

In 1972, Reverend Jesse Jackson went on @sesamestreet to recite the “I am Somebody” poem, just a few years after he witnessed the horrific assassination of his mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Throughout his entire life he shared this message with youth because he knew that before they ever kill your body, they will try to kill your spirit and your mind. But if youth believe that they ARE somebody, then they will also begin to believe they are WORTH fighting for and are DESERVING of liberation.

To all our youth:

YOU ARE SOMEBODY. Remember this. ✊🏽

What a powerful night at Freedom Fest 2026. Four+ hours of truth, community, music, justice, liberation, powerful voices, and people coming together with purpose.

And I had the honor of closing out the entire evening with my original spoken word piece, “What Does Freedom Mean?” ❤️

I carried my ancestors to that microphone with me, and I left everything I had on that stage.

These are just a few moments from an unforgettable night. Catch the Facebook Lives on my Solid Truth page to experience more of Freedom Fest.
