POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Bill was one of my first students as a writing instructor with @brinkstoriesforchange. As a former professional musician, storytelling and the visual arts came second nature to him.

One particularly tender day, his cohort and I paused to investigate what emotion we felt trying to "pound down the door" while we worked on stories that focused on major turning points in the past. We listened to the message that emotion was trying to tell us, and had a compassionate, reassuring conversation with that emotion.

For Bill, that emotion was a fierce protector that visually took the form of a weasel, his favorite animal. Over decades of harrowing trauma, this protector had become a paranoid "shadow self," and had convinced Bill there were only two people in the world: wolves, or sheep.

That day, Bill looked at this platitude with all the wisdom and care he had cultivated over his decades of experience as a father, friend, and formerly incarcerated community member in recovery, and sent love and gratitude to his protector, while finally letting go of a belief system that had kept him disconnected from himself and his loved ones for so long.

Witnessing Bill's transformation as he worked through his comic memoir has inspired so much pride and awe at his bravery, resilience, and creativity. He's an insightful and respected leader at @tosadenver, and has recently shared his memoir with his daughter - who he never stopped talking about throughout class - to rekindle their connection.

My chapter with Bill and his entire cohort holds such a special place in my heart. If you'd like to read his story - which I highly recommend - order a copy of the "Illusion/Delusion" issue of @frictionseries. Link in bio 🖤

I wanted to highlight one of my absolute favorite literary magazines, F(r)iction. I think literary magazines/journals are such an integral part of the bookish and writing communities. They’re a perfect place for readers to discover new authors and for new writers to find their voice.

F(r)iction, in particular, is part of an amazing initiative called the Brink Literacy Project which promotes literacy in prisons, shelters, and all kinds of other places. They even highlight some of the very talented writers they mentor in their issues. It also helps that these are some of the most beautiful literary magazines I’ve ever seen. I mean are we seeing those holographic covers?? And the inside is filled with even more amazing art that gives the stories life beyond just the words on the page.

Maybe I’ll make another post soon highlighting some of my other favorite lit mags because there’s so many amazing ones out there. If you haven’t tried reading from literary magazines, you can find plenty of stories published online for free as well. I highly recommend giving them a shot.

If committing even to a 200-page novel feels like a lot right now, start shorter.

These short stories are not by well known names. They're by writers whose stories found a home in literary magazines. Magazines whose whole job is finding fiction worth backing before anyone else is paying attention. A lot of writers who publish novels later and win major prizes started exactly here, in an issue very few were reading closely.

What if my love for you...
were the kind you've only ever read about in stories, yet I long to give it to you as though you were the very one those stories spoke of?

I pulled four cards for June under a full moon and every single one of them was ink, quills, and pages. 🌕✒️

I missed two moons. life was loud. I carried what needed carrying and stayed away from this space until I was ready to come back honestly.
