I can't believe it's taken me half a lifetime to break out of the convention of indoor working. Or working in a concrete box, as some people have described it to me. Working al desko has been a complete revelation.

I was inspired to WFG (work from the garden) by @al_humphreys, whose new book Unwilded introduces low-bar ways to get back to nature - WFG can absolutely include a meeting in a pub garden. Yay. Frieda Gormley, the trailblazing tastemaker behind @houseofhackney has been WFG for yonks, and it shows so beautifully in her work and her philosophy (which she eloquently sets out in her new book In the Company of Nature). And there is tons of science to back up the sense that we all get that WFG is productive - thanks to @findingnature_ for distilling it all for me.
I also just came across @wild_working - an app for sharing the best outdoor workimg spots, which you should totally look up if you're inspired to leave the concrete box behind.

2 weeks ago I shared a post about re discovering the magic in life, after a good 5 years of what I’d consider to be magic erosion. lol. It was off the back of my 30th, a dear friend’s 40th, an amazing trip to Ibiza and a mother baby retreat. Magic all around.

Since then I have re embarked on night weaning round 3 with my 2 year old (= sleepless nights galore. Like 3 hours of sleep sometimes). Hosted/modelled in 3 shoots in my garden. Had my first full work day (7am-7pm) away from my boy. A solo Muma over night trip to London with my boy, for a talking gig x family and friends time. And then little man of course got sick, ft fever. All a very different flavour of magic… magic with a generous sprinkling of pressure, let’s say.

I set myself a mission to learn to regulate my nervous system better this decade and reconnect with my magic/our magic/world magic.
I’m trying to figure out if that means doing less (is that even possible!? Slow living culture can be so annoyingly unrealistic) doing different or getting more resilient… perhaps all 3.
I do know I feel VERY different off the back of these past 2 weeks compared with my last check in. The magic is less evident, it’s requiring discipline, it’s no longer effortless. I think that’s ok, I don’t think any of us are entitled to magic. We have got to learn to relate with it. Anyway, the garden is full of the stuff, I just have to remember to be open to it…
I think half the job is intention.

Wondering if it’s possible to feel fatigued without loosing the magic… I’m thinking it is 🤞🏾That would be lush.

The Friday Bookshelf 📚

If I could replace the Elons and the Sams with a better board of people to guide us through the AI era, @friedagormley would sit at the head of the table.

The co-founder of @houseofhackney has just published In the Company of Nature - part memoir, part rallying cry, part handbook for building modern business by choosing a regenerative, not extractive, path.

It’s a reminder not to confuse speed and recall with wisdom and that life (and business) is emergent, complex, and deeply interconnected.

I have too much to say on this, so a longer Substack will come. For now: buy this book. Especially if you run an SME, or you’re trying to use AI responsibly without letting ‘efficiency at all costs’ become the goal.

And, if you can, take advantage of these sunny days and read it, outdoors, In the Company of Nature 🍃

“There can be a dangerous mythology around entrepreneurship which can airbrush out reality,” says @friedagormley co-founder of @houseofhackney. “We are often told stories of effortless success and vision and growth but rarely the fear and uncertainty. Every chapter of my life has shaped me, so it was important to me to include within the book moments of vulnerability, uncertainty and what could be perceived as failure but what is all part of the process of becoming.”

It was my pleasure to get an exclusive first look in Ireland at Frieda Gormley's insightful and inspiring book In the Company of Nature and to interview her for the stunning July issue of @theglossmag with thanks to editors @jenstevensdub and @siomhac. Her story was the perfect for this month's issue inspired by all things nature with beautiful floral edits by @aislinncoffeystyleeditor, the summer mood by @susanzelouf, insights into the trend for gardening by @ohegartysarah and an interview with @catofglin by @deirdremcquillan.

It was wonderful to speak to Frieda about her insightful and inspiring book, the company decision to place Mother Nature and Future Generations at the centre of their business and the idea that business can be less about endless extraction and more about regeneration. Her book is a fascinating insight into her business journey so far and a must read for anyone interested in entrepreneurship, sustainable business, craft and regenerative business practices.

Speaking at @writingandideas @borrishouse recently Mary Robinson placed a chair on stage to represent Future Generations. This is exactly what Frieda and House of Hackney have done - legally appointing Mother Nature and Future Generations to it's board.

Country & Townhouse magazine never fails to be beautiful, eloquent and prescient but this issue framing and highlighting water trumps everything. Thank you so much for flagging on the cover my interview with Satish Kumar the peace pilgrim who has been calling for an awareness of our connection with nature for over half a sanctuary and who is celebrating two important anniversaries this year.

Satish Kumar has been the custodian, first as editor and now editor emeritus of Resurgence the deep ecological movement spawned by E F Schumacher and Teddy Goldsmith which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.

His own 90th birthday was celebrated a month ago with a tea party hosted by Frieda Gormley co-founder of House of Hackney the second company to put nature on its board, and with the release of his latest book Peace is Possible with a foreward by the celebrated children’s author Michael Morpurgo who founded Farms for City Children.
Country & Townhouse is on the book stands Wednesday and delivered today to subscribers. It’s already online.
