/ On View 🎀 / As the leaves change outside, Friends Art Space gallery holds on to a soft palette complete with flowers, ribbons, pearls, and wool within its pink painted walls. Scaffolding for Roses, the latest installment brings together the work of Kansas City-based ceramist Maura Wright and Nashville-based mix media artist Vadis Turner. The poetic works which vary in size and scale, appear in conversation with each other challenging the grid which gallerist Margaret says is “a historically masculine framework and emblem of industrial and modernist logic. Associated with rigidity, repetition, efficiency, and control, the grid has also been implicated in the erasure of craft and entrenching the hierarchies that separate industrial production from domestic and handmade practices.”

I made this work thinking about our energetic time stamp.

A chair holds the weight of a body, but maybe it holds something else, too. Memory. Residue. A celestial signature. I made this work thinking about object attachment theroy and the possibility that the things we live with become witnesses. That our presence impresses itself upon them, just as others impress themselves upon us.

Despite its fleshy folds and seemingly collapsing form, the chair is structurally sound and fully functional. It can still hold you.

What remains when the body leaves?

I am so grateful to you, Margaret, for this alignment and opportunity.
