Crossing “crossing the headwaters of the Mississippi River” off my bucket list as I finally made it to Itasca State Park a week ago!

I felt Miss Mighty Mississippi (who is more like Miss Modest Mississippi at her start) deserved its own post. 🩵

My heart is so full after last week! 💗 I’ll share more from the hike/Itasca overall in a separate post.

When a fundraising event for Friends of the Mississippi is fun & educational, too. Todd loved getting a guided tour of the Univ of MN's St. Anthony Falls Lab (especially, as a UMN alum in engineering)— doing awesome research related to rivers right on the Mississippi. Including the testing channel below the dam that can use real river water for various tests. A major study is underway regarding potentially removing the lock and dams that are no longer needed for barge traffic and how that'd impact everything.

Message from the St. Croix River: WATER OVER NICKEL! A foreign mining conglomerate is proposing a nickel mine — the Tamarack-Talon mine — that would pollute the watershed of the St. Croix River. The Mille Lacs Band is leading the Water Over Nickel Campaign to protect the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers from this mine. Minn DNR is accepting comments on his proposed mine until September 14. In 1926, a study of the Mississippi River found just three living fish in a 42-mile stretch between the Twin Cities and Red Wing Minnesota. Pollution from sewage, industry, and other types of runoff had taken a toll on our river and the communities that depended on it.

Looking at our data for 2026, we now have cleaner water, improved wastewater treatment, stronger environmental protections, and habitat restorations. The Mississippi now thrives with over 100 different species across the metro contributing to a total of 120 river species statewide!

Minnesota still has rivers, lakes, and streams facing challenges from pollution, nutrients, sediment, and habitat loss. The work that started 100 years ago continues today with all of us having a role to play.

Want to help keep Minnesota’s rivers healthy? Consider supporting organizations doing the work!

Friends of the Mississippi River — protecting, restoring, and enhancing the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities.

Freshwater — working to protect Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, streams, and drinking water while helping communities take action for clean water.

Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy — using law, science, and advocacy to protect Minnesota’s water and environment.

One Mississippi — bringing organizations and communities together to build a healthier, more resilient Mississippi River.

100 years of progress. There’s still work to do. Let’s keep the river moving forward. 💙

I paddled the Mississippi River today and went through Lock and Dam Number One in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. This is what it is like to go through the lock on a kayak. It’s like waiting for a big bathtub to drain. Enjoy! Reach out if you have any questions about this paddle or going through the lock! #mississippi

Minnesotans love water and are lucky to steward not only the Boundary Waters, Lake Superior, but also the Mississippi River headwaters. A new proposed nickel sulfide mine threatens the Mississippi and St.Croix rivers, along with Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Treaty Rights.

The DNR is now taking public comment on the proposed Talon mine.

At this time of unprecedented rollback of core environmental protections at the federal level, Minnesotans are counting on our DNR to step up and deliver their mission of conservation and sustainable resource management.

We have justified concerns that the DNR may not be ready to stand up for Minnesotans and against industry pressure. A former Talon/Rio Tinto employee is now on the mining staff of the DNR. The tar sands Line 3 pipeline was permitted and its construction caused long term damage to aquifers. A recent Star Tribune editorial, “As fires burn, another threat to the Boundary Waters looms”, by former DNR staff pointed out the issues of industry pressure, including the presumption of approval for projects – rather than considering that ‘no’ is an answer the DNR can and should make when the facts demand.

It is essential that the DNR conduct a rigorous scoping that answers all of the questions that are raised during the public comment period.

DNR staff and especially leadership – we are calling on you to step up to protect our water and ways of life. Follow the law and conduct a full and rigorous scoping. Minnesotans will be watching and looking for good governance, where our agencies are accountable to their missions and the people on Minnesota, not polluters.
