Another section of Acadia I hadn’t been to in previous visits was the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. We didn’t know what to expect, but we heard it was a small parking area- so got up super early to beat others there, but just not early enough. Turns out it’s very small rocky ledges to climb and balance on and there were others already set-up. We were able to squeeze in and see the beautiful sunrise, and then as the early birds left, able to get better views. Moving around on the rocks is a little tricky – and I didn’t want to bring my backpack so I stuck an extra lens in my pocket AND THEN IT FELL OUT AND ONTO THE ROCKS! I let out an expletive but miraculously, it didn’t fall into the crevices and someone there grabbed it for me.

My earlier vantage point didn’t show much of the lighthouse, and as I moved it did get better and I caught some waves. I think you have to be a daredevil in order to get full pictures of it, especially during high tide when a lot of the rocks aren’t reachable. The morning sun shining on the rocks and lighthouse was beautiful.

9 years of chasing fall foliage, and Acadia National Park still managed to leave me speechless. 🍁🥹

Well, I've been a little quiet around here for the past week. And for a very good reason!

I've been off the grid, road-tripping through coastal Maine, devouring lobster rolls, exploring charming seaside towns, and soaking in more fall colors than my eyes could possibly take in. 🦞🌊🍂

They said New England Fall this year, was going to be spectacular. And let me tell you, they weren't exaggerating. Not one bit!

After years of chasing fall foliage, I can confidently say that this was some of the most vibrant autumn scenery I've ever witnessed.

The fiery reds, brilliant oranges, golden yellows. Entire landscapes bursting with colors that almost didn't seem real.

And then there was Acadia National Park - where the mountains meet the Atlantic, towering evergreens stand alongside brilliant fall foliage, and every winding road seems to lead to another breathtaking view.

I've always loved the mountains in autumn, but experiencing fall along Maine's rugged coastline was something else entirely. 🤎

My camera roll is overflowing, my heart is full, and I have so many stories from our coastal Maine road trip to share.

But first, let's start with Acadia 🍂🌊

The many moods of Jordan Pond in Autumn. Or a few of the moods, from an optimistic early morning pre-hike perspective hoping to beat the coming rain, to the overcast after-rain, where we were only a little drenched from walking it, half-way in the pouring rain. Luckily, we were prepared. We were NOT prepared for the crowds that would come at opening time for the Jordan Pond House Restaurant – no Popovers for us.

Early morning visit to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, from dawn through the golden hour. Even though arriving early, the rocks were already taken by other photographers. It was high tide, so there wasn’t much room. This was my first time here, and climbing on these rocky cliffs can be dangerous. I enjoyed the sunrise, then snapped a few shots of the lighthouse from a tight angle. Definitely hope to return in the future! 💡🏠🌅

Out of every Maine sunrise I experienced during my short visit, this one from the rocks at Bass Harbor Head felt the most dramatic. That soft pre-glow lighting up the clouds from underneath, then the sun finally breaking the horizon. Distant buoy bells chiming, waves gently lapping against the rocks below, and a soft cool breeze… pure magic. 🌅

American Pine Marten

Truly the rarest animal I’ve ever seen/photographed in my life. I am still in disbelief that these photos belong to me! It was such an offchance encounter. I happened to be driving past a place I visit often and decided to pull in, even though it was noon and I never see anything at noon. As I was parking my truck, I saw the slightest flick of what I thought was either a long neck or a tail and thought it might be either a Mink or an Otter. I had seen otters here before. When I walked up I was in total disbelief that it was actually a Pine Marten. I knew immediately based on the iconic orange patch of fur on its neck. What on earth!!! It spotted me as quickly as I did it, and ran right up to this rock to get a better look at me. I hung around for a short time watching it sunbathe. If anyone knows these creatures better than me, I’d love to know if it appears to be a young one. It didn’t seem completely with it so I wasn’t sure if it was sick or just a tiny guy.

I am so grateful for this encounter. I might never see another Pine Marten in my life and I’m really glad I snapped the photos as good as I would’ve been able to. According to @inaturalistorg this is only the 4th sighting of an American Marten on Mount Desert Island. Gonna be riding this high for quite some time.
