The Muddy Pandas after school program has been meeting for several weeks and this is my first post about them! Rest assured, they’ve been working hard!

Today’s tasks included spreading mulch around the outdoor classroom before the rain comes to help us cut down on mud, adding soil to bed number 2 (for the best chance at prolific pea plants this year), helping water, harvesting and saving sunflower seeds, and working on their bug hotels.

The afterschool program exists not only to explore new topics and learn new garden skills, but to support our in-school classes, as well. Because of this hard working crew, we will have a cleaner outdoor classroom, a new arch in the garden to support our beloved snap peas, and they’ve planted tons of seeds to support both our plant sales and to give us something new to grow and harvest from the garden.

We’re so lucky to have an enthusiastic group of kids and fantastic support from our grown up volunteers.

A huge thank you to everyone who made our Halloween fundraiser a success!

We got to watch students and their families decorate their pumpkins and enjoy our garden space…and a few smart moms who ducked away from the Halloween Happening busyness for a kid free crafting break. We regulated our nervous systems with a little tea spritzer (hibiscus, tulsi, oat straw, and a little orange carbonated water), snacked on some apples, muffins, and pumpkin seeds while crafting and catching up with old friends and making new ones.

We feel so loved and supported by our Benchley community!

A BIG thank you to Cynthia Parsons for chairing Halloween Happenings again this year, and to all the BW volunteers. 🫶

We’ve spent the last two weeks investigating compost and learning about what goes into a successful compost bin. And while the kids are supposed to be identifying various things in the compost, they’re really befriending roli polies, and who can blame them? (We practically have to shake the kids down and have them empty their pockets in front of us to keep them from kidnapping (poli napping?) our roli polies!

And, for those who think that only boys enjoy holding worms and roli polies? Heck no! The girls are every bit as much into holding the critters as the boys are. Gardens and all their creepy crawlies appeal to (almost) everyone- regardless of age or gender.

Here’s just a smattering of the names they’ve come up with:
Fred
Frank
Jeff
Greg
Bob (a surprising amount of Bobs!)
Bob Jr
Billy Bob
Samantha
Sherman
Princess Sprinkles

We have been learning all about pumpkins! Today, we got a little messy and creative by painting our hands and turning our handprints into a giant pumpkin to decorate our classroom door! 🧡🍂 We love adding a personal panda touch to our classroom and celebrating fall together! 🐼🎃
