In 1984, Lego Technic was under pressure!

In a good way though, as that was the year Lego introduced air pneumatics, bringing a whole new kind of mechanical function to builds. The first system used a hand pump, distribution block, switches, tubing, and single-port cylinders. By directing either pressure or vacuum through the system, builders could make things like excavator arms or forklifts move using nothing but air!

This first version wasn't perfect though, since the force each cylinder had was limited due to using a single hose to actuate in both directions. Just 5 years later, Lego redesigned the system with double-acting cylinders, giving them two air connections and making pneumatic mechanisms more powerful. Either way, air pneumatics have remained one of Technic's coolest ways to bring real world engineering into a Lego model. From pressure and vacuum to modern pneumatic machinery, it’s amazing to think that this little system has been turning Lego into functional machines for over 40 years!

Naturally then there was only one watch to pair with this, from a watch company long associated with building and architecture; Mido! The new Mido Ocean Star with its blocky indices remains a favorite of mine, especially when paired with a great strap like the new ZA Polaris Flex Daybreak 😍

Thanks @zulualphastraps for providing this strap and the great folks @fritz_bricks where I was able to find this amazing set in near perfect condition!
