Hello friends, I know I have been out of touch. I don’t know how to talk about what’s going on… I am not sure there are words. I am just completely in it. My only option right now is to be fully present for what life has presented. I’ve been through many things, but nothing comes close to this. That being said, I cannot emphasize enough how much my people have kept me sane and given me the continued strength to show up fully for my Momma. Thank you all for being there in the many ways you have. It brings me to tears to even think about. Thank you for encouraging me (sometimes forcing me) to get out. For the texts, the food, the laughs… for getting me to smile and allowing me to cry. You guys remind me of who I am and that my family and I are not alone. More soon, for now… GRATITUDE ♥️

My first 24 hours at #CreatingChange was marked by a “Circle of Friendships” (Round Dance) A social and ceremonial dance within our native sibling communities to symbolize community, healing, and unity. Each drum beat reminding us of our capacity to beat as one. When I zoom out, that’s the best way I can describe what the first day felt like. From landing at DCA, to sharing a Lyft with @rayzhon to the conference, escorted by @jaron.goto to check in and landing into the Pasifika Caucus to the round dance with the Two Spirit & Native LGBTQ+ Center for Equality. At each turn and each twist of a moment, from one hand to another in a revolving exchange of care. Holding hope in their hearts and offering it freely. They’re the ones who believe in liberation, in softness, in joyand in justice. Their Alofa is a reminder that community is medicine, and that Alofa is still the loudest thing in the room 💛

Burlesque is a path where I have been held by community. I will never forget the night outside Shuga Shaq that Dahlia Kash stopped me mid sentence to tell me that we can’t do this alone. I walked into rooms as a new performer with big dreams and shaking hands, trying to look confident while my insides did backflips. I thought I had to be polished to be welcome. I thought I had to earn softness. But burlesque met me differently. It met me in green rooms that felt like kitchens, people moving around each other with the ease of chosen family. Someone adjusting a strap without making it weird. Someone offering lash glue like communion. Someone saying, “Drink water,” the way an auntie says, “Baby, eat,” because they know the crash is coming after the high. Community looked like bobby pins and safety pins, like a spare pair of tights, like “I’ve got you” spoken without needing a whole explanation. I remember nights when I didn’t feel like I belonged, too where people built up tall walls and locked gates, handing out passwords only to those they deemed fit. Where I could feel the hierarchy in the air, like invisible velvet rope: who gets booked, who gets praised, who gets protected, who gets left to fend for themselves. My community taught me that stage magic isn’t only built in rehearsal. It’s built in relationships. In the way we clap the loudest for the nervous baby burlesquer. In the way we tip each other like we’re trying to rewrite a world that refuses to value our labor. In the way we share names, contacts, rides, hotel rooms, playlists, and hard-won wisdom…because nobody should have to learn everything the painful way. The old guard way. The “I went through the mud so… so should too” way. And the deeper I went, the more I realized: this art form survives because we keep choosing each other. That’s why I’m obsessed with building community now. Not as a brand, not as a buzzword…like a practice at an altar. I want more rooms where people can feel the exhale of belonging. Because burlesque didn’t just give me a stage. It gave me people. And once you’ve been held like that, you can’t help but build reach out hands to catch others.
