The Phase Two works to Delos @sissinghurstcastlegardennt, which started in March, sees the removal of the garage by the Priest’s House to allow a continuation of the Delos landscape around the building. Using stacked boulders of the same local ragstone as before, a small gateway gorge has been created, echoing Grecian mountain gorges, to give a sense of compression and discovery on the way to the Little North Garden, which for many years has been inaccessible. Over time Macedonian oaks and Judas trees planted into the boulderscape will create an overarching canopy that will create a sense of enclosure while also providing privacy for guests staying in the house. This north-facing position has presented an opportunity to use a more shade-tolerant selection of Grecian and Mediterranean natives including daphne, acanthus, ferns, euphorbia and corydalis. It also allows for a range of bulbous plants for early interest, among them Arum creticum, Cyclamen creticum, Muscari comosum, Narcissus tazetta and the snowdrops, Galanthus elwesii, Galanthus gracilis and Galanthus reginae-olgae. This final phase of work has improved flow around this end of the garden, liberating the Little North Garden, which is now fully accessible from both the White Gardens and Delos, making a better connection between the Priest’s House and the Main House and connecting these three contrasting garden rooms once more. - Amazing team work from @troyscottsmith1 @saffronprentis and Richard Gravett on planting and from @froggattnigel on groundworks and hard landscaping. And thanks to Sissinghurst’s General Manager, Philip Barnes @philipbarnesgardendesign, for having the vision to follow this through. Project lead in the studio has been @sam.breed.landscape

Delivering Delos 🌿🌸☀️ SCROLL LEFT 🌿🌸☀️ It was no surprise to Harold Nicholson and Vita Sackville-West that their attempt to recreate a Greek island landscape on a cold north-facing slope on heavy Wealden clay at Sissinghurst Castle in the 1930’s failed 🌿🌸☀️ ‘This has not been a success so far,’ wrote Vita in 1953, ‘but perhaps someday it will come right’ 🌿🌸☀️ Roll on 65 years and head gardener Troy Scott-Smith @troyscottsmith1 in his remit to recreate the spirit of Vita’s Sissinghurst decided to give it another go and engaged the help of ‘garden godparent’ Dan Pearson @coyotewillow to reimagine Delos 🌿🌸☀️ The master stroke here was to create a series of (local Kentish ragstone) stone terraces that tilt gently south to catch the sun and back fill them with a free draining mix of 50% ragstone gravel, 25% crushed brick and 25% poor sugar beet topsoil 🌿🌸☀️ The scheme was skilfully installed by @froggattnigel , Grecian artefacts were added and the garden planted with a highly considered range of drought-tolerant plants that can be found in Greece (many supplied by @olivierfilippi )🌿🌸☀️ . Now into its third year and on one of the sunniest evenings in June, with the columns and cypresses casting long sharp shadows across the dusty ground and the Dianthus perfuming the still air, you really could be transported to Delos 🌿🌸☀️ And if you look very carefully across the fields to the north (casting aside the Kentish oasts) you can just about make out a hazy blue Mediterranean Sea…. almost!🌿🌸☀️ Thank you again @guilfoyleannie @gardenmasterclass for organising this wonderful event and of course to Troy, Dan and Nigel for their skill, knowledge and commitment to such a fascinating project 🌿🌸☀️ . #sissinghurst #sissinghurstcastlegarden #englishcountrygarden #countrygarden #nationaltrust #nationaltrustgardens #danpearson #delos #troyscottsmith #vitasackvillewest #senseofplace #icon #iconic #kentgardens #nature #garden #gardens #gardenphotography #nature #recreation #gardendesign #gardening
