The art of pools

There is something about a pool that no other element in architecture quite replicates. It is water held still by design, nature made geometric, a living surface that changes with every shift in light and weather. In the middle of a built environment it feels almost like a contradiction. Something that belongs to the natural world, contained and shaped by something entirely man made.

The best pools don't feel like amenities. They feel like the whole point of the space around them. Everything else, the surrounding stone, the loungers, the walls and overhangs, seems to exist in relation to them. They anchor a space in a way that is hard to explain but immediately obvious. And at a certain hour, when the light hits the surface at just the right angle and the water takes on a color that doesn't quite exist anywhere else, it becomes something closer to a piece of design than a place to swim.

That is the art of it. Not the pool itself, but what it does to everything around it.
