The @lizzobeeating cover for @britishvogue has really got me thinking. If you've followed me for a while, you'll know that my PhD thesis focused on body image and fashion marketing in Japan's film and fashion industries in the 1920s and 1930s. One of the motivations for me to study this topic was to show both the lineage of how the film and fashion industries have worked hard to cultivate our bodily anxieties to motivate us to buy their products since their conception, as well as illustrating that this is a global process which functions in the exact same way today. Seeing Lizzo (who is one of my heroes!) on the cover of Vogue gives me a glimmer of hope that people who have thus far been excluded from high-fashion spheres, everywhere, will see those images and feel included - I hope that perhaps the commercial implications of those strong, powerful editorial images will also illustrate that models/stars outside of the fashion "norm" still have incredible buying power as your readership can actually identify with them. Of course, this also relies on high-end brands producing plus sizes too, which is another story (how can you say we won't buy your products if you never give us the opportunity?!) One of the things that motivated me to become a model was to see if you could produce a high-end, editorial style fashion image using a statistically average female body - I like to think that I've demonstrated that you absolutely can, but I'd love to know your thoughts! Vogue, you've got the ball rolling. Keep it up - feature diverse models throughout your editorials, without any signposting about a model's size or shape. Don't make this a one off publicity stunt. No publication has the power to incite change like you. I've got faith in you; you can do this 👍

It is with immense relief and gratitude that I announce that today I passed my PhD viva voce examination, after nearly 4 years of blood, sweat and tears. If you've followed me for a while you'll know that this has been a very emotional process, and the finality of actually completing this process hasn't quite sunk in. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my family and friends (including so many of you here reading this now!) for all of your support. Especially I'd like to thank my uncle and my grandfather who I unfortunately lost during my research period - I honestly would never have been able to achieve this without their involvement, and I think it was their memory more than anything that pushed me to the finish line. Right now, I look nothing like this. I'm sweaty, tired and just a little bit tearful. But this is what I think 23-year-old-me imagined Dr Lois would look like, so here she is, 4 years later. I'm looking forward to a creative future, whatever it may bring.
