@seb_marchand & I climbed the Arete des Cosmiques on the Aiguille du Midi back in April. This weekend, we climbed to the top of Cathedral. Both feature the fun of topping out into incredulous masses wanting to know how you got up there🤣.

Which is better? Depends…

✅There’s coffee at the top out on the Midi.
✅But the coffee at @frontsidecoffee is better😁.

Coffee debates aside, I really enjoy the process of training people up in the excellent Northeastern classroom for bigger terrain of The European Alps.

Seb kind of got it backwards, starting with me in The Alps before climbing and training in the Northeast 😆, but I’m looking forward to seeing the NE progress applied in The Alps.

Let’s put together a plan!

3 days in New Hampshire in fall, our full itinerary 🍂

🏡 Stay: Airbnb at Deer Park Resort, North Woodstock

DAY 1: Road trip up
☕ Coffee Labs Roasters, Bronxville NY
🍁 Quick stop for Vermont colours (they weren’t at peak yet, so check the foliage forecast before you go)
🍕 Molly’s Restaurant & Bar, Hanover: get the spinach artichoke dip
🥾 Beaver Brook Trailhead, North Woodstock

DAY 2: Franconia Notch
🥯 Woodstock Pie & Coffee: jalapeño bagel with scallion cream cheese
🥾 Flume Gorge: 2-mile loop, about 1.5 hrs. Book tickets online
🚡 Cannon Mountain: we rode the aerial tram in its final season, then a short trail at the top. One of the best views of the trip
⛰️ Artist’s Bluff: short but steep, and the view is insane

DAY 3: Kancamagus Highway + Crawford Notch
🥞 Dijon Crêperie for brunch
🍁 Pemigewasset & Hancock Overlooks
💧 Rocky Gorge + Falls Pond loop
☕ Frontside Coffee Roasters, North Conway
☁️ Crawford Notch State Park: the most underrated stop. The clouds felt close enough to touch
🥾 Kedron Flume Trail: steep, but there’s a waterfall at the top
🍣 Eastern Paradise Asian Cuisine, Rochester: sushi and noodles on the way home
🗽 One last stop in New York City, then home to Long Island

➕ Didn’t make it, but next time
• Sabbaday Falls (short walk off the Kancamagus)
• Lower Falls and Sugar Hill Overlook (Kancamagus)
• Echo Lake (right below Artist’s Bluff)
• Mount Willard (Crawford Notch, about 3 miles round trip)

💡 Tips
• Kancamagus parking needs a $5 day pass
• Flume Gorge is open until Oct 25 this year
• Start early, overlooks get busy by midday
• Peak colour moves fast, so check a foliage map the week before

Save this for your fall trip and send it to who you’re going with 🤍

For all you leaf peepers and hikers headed up north to check out the foliage, here are some spots in North Conway, NH with great gluten free options. Enjoy!

@wickedfreshburgers
I’ve tried the chicken fingers and fries, truffle fries, Wicked fresh salad with all-in-vin dressing, and the Hangry burger on a gluten free bun. I can personally confirm that the Hangry burger does indeed hit the spot when you are hangry after a long hike! Everything I’ve tried from Wicked has been delicious and their fryers are dedicated GF so there’s no concern about cross contamination.

@vistabev
This unassuming market on Rt 16 has one of the best craft cider and gluten free beer selections around. Trust me, it’s worth a stop!

@flatbreadcompanynorthconway
Very good gluten free pizza that is actually a decent size (two meals for me) and very flavorful! My server explained that they prep the gluten free pizzas in a separate area and bake them on a separate pan to limit cross contamination, although it is a shared cooking environment. I got the Mopsy’s Kalua Pork, which was untraditional but really delicious.

@saphousemeaderynoco
Great spot for burgers, fries (they have a dedicated fryer), and a mead tasting or cocktail. Their gluten free buns stand up pretty well to the hefty burgers and toppings. The day I visited they had a special burger with gluten free onion rings, which was probably a first for me!

A Taste of Thai
The online menu clearly notes which menu items are gluten free, including many soup, salad, pad thai, and curry options. I was very pleased with the red curry.

@thelocalgrocer
Great place to stock up on gluten free groceries and to enjoy breakfast or lunch at their farm cafe. They have gluten free bread options for sandwiches and prep them in a separate area to limit cross contamination.

@bagelsplusnh
Bagels Plus has been serving up some of the best gluten free bagels around for many years AND they have a separate toaster they will use if you specify that you have a gluten allergy. While this is not a dedicated gluten free establishment, they take allergies/celiac seriously. I have eaten many a breakfast sandwich from Bagels Plus before skiing and hiking a

Frontside Coffee Roasters never disappoints! I ordered a Mocha Java Frappe and a Maple Latte, and both drinks were delicious. The maple latte had just the right amount of flavor, not too sweet and perfectly balanced. I always make sure to stop here for coffee whenever I’m in the area.

A very belated #ChikosCoffeeMondays (that’s what happens when you’re on vacation) featuring a maple cream cold brew 🍁 from @frontsidecoffee

Shout out to Mt. Chocura for the epic backdrop. 🏔️

Latergram from our trip to NH! We stopped by @frontsidecoffee after a cute lil train ride. We all needed a boost and their coffee packed a punch. High quality coffee beans and in flavor, we tried their iced pandan latte and a black coffee for my husband. They had a range of drinks but if you truly appreciate coffee and all the flavors roasting can offer, this is the spot for you!

When you have a human in your circle who you see struggling or tells you they’re struggling and can’t quite figure it out… and you see ‘the thing’ that is the cause…(and maybe everyone else around them sees it too). Say it! Be the one who courageously and gently says the thing that could give the loved one relief. Everyone has been in those situations where somebody you care about is trying to figure something out and you see it so clearly. Tell them. If you don’t, who will?
Life is short- everyone deserves a short cut on a path vs stumbling over the fallen trees.
