SCRIPT:

Hello,

My name is [your name], and I am a [student, faculty member, alumnus] at UW-Madison. I urge you to vote no on agenda item 79 of the Common Council meeting on October 20, 2026.

In the wake of the police killing of Corey Ruiz as well as the 2024 death of Richard Lee Johnson in police custody, now is not the time to weaken civilian oversight of the police by firing the Independent Monitor. I feel deeply that the City of Madison ought to hold the police accountable for abuses of power that have continued despite community outrage. Instead, our elected officials have shown that they intend to continue siding with the police in these instances.

Students and community members want justice for Corey Ruiz, Richard Lee Johnson, and all victims of police violence. The Office of the Independent Police Monitor should be strengthened rather than weakened.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Jada Berry, one of the 3 people arrested on 10/8/2026, explains her story and shares graphic details of police violence. She was brutally arrested in front of her 1-year old child. Jada, Kennedy, and Nicholas deserve justice, and thankfully they are alive to fight for it.

We stand in solidarity with them, and we’ll continue working with them to hold MPD accountable.

No more deaths in the Milwaukee County Jail! For decades Black and brown Milwaukeeans have been subjected to high incarceration rates in a deadly, inhumane jail, but County and the Sheriff will not do anything to fix it. Come to our community gathering on 8/27 at Alice’s Garden from 6-8 with @blocbyblocmke @metcalfepark2020 @frso_wi to hear more about what’s going on around town, and how Community Control gives us the tools to address the racism and repression in the jail and across Milwaukee!

TWO YEARS since FITCHBURG POLICE took Kevin from us. They entered his home after Kevin called 911 for help, shot him three times less than five minutes after busting down the apartment door. Then they prevented SSM Health from calling his family, so Kevin was alone for three days before he died. Kevin deserves to be remembered!

Madison, WI – On another hot day in Madison, July 28, at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets, six days after the murder of Corey Ruiz by the Madison Police Department, Madisonians continue to occupy the streets.

Many people return time and time again to visit the memorial, now dressed with flowers, candles and pictures of victims of police crimes. There is also a continuous stream of new faces, as individuals and organizations travel from around the country to visit, pay their respects, and help to organize on the ground.

On this day, the spirits were high and the people were looking forward, seeking to create a lasting monument to resistance and the pursuit of justice. To the north of the memorial, in front of the closed Crystal Corner Bar, above which the marquee reads “Corey Ruiz,” Freedom Inc. has set up a tent to carry out a four-day educational series where they will discuss in detail their demands to get justice for Corey and create change in Madison.

On this first day of sessions, led by Freedom Inc., the immediate task was to write postcards laying out the demands to be delivered to city officials, including Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and District Attorney Ismael Ozanne, who has presided over several police murders in his tenure and continuously refused to press charges despite consistent community backlash.

The demands are as follows: Arrest the killer cop (Kiel Baitinger-Peterson); defund the police; hand over all evidence to independent monitor so that OIPM (Office of the Independent Police Monitor) can do an investigation; strengthen the PCO (Police Civilian Oversight) Board, and community control over police.
