POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Sokoto is one of those places that becomes clearer the longer you look at it. The roads, the old compounds, the quiet corners, the colours of the earth and the people moving through them are all part of a landscape shaped by a history much older than the buildings that remain. This is the Sokoto beyond the postcard; the city where scholarship, faith, trade, authority and ordinary Northern life have occupied the same ground for generations. Some places preserve history in monuments. Sokoto carries much of its history in the way the city still lives.

I get asked a lot about my creative process and I have found that it is a difficult thing to speak on simply because it is hardly ever straightforward. During this sit-down with my brother @frvralien I managed to properly articulate the best I could (using the intro track [Sober] off the #WithOpenArms album) exactly how songwriting in general works for me.

Over time, I’ve learned that it is mostly more an unraveling than it is a deliberate attempt to put pen to paper - or even anything else.

I’m certain the writers in the room can relate.

By far my best part of being a musician.

As you were.

Dembe is a lifestyle in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Children as young as ten start fighting in tournaments. Collaborating with nigerian doc filmmakers Eric and Dave I documented the young fighters to understand their ambitions and hopes. #dembe #drone #nigeria #documentary #fight

Had an amazing time on No Cap with @frvralien. We had some great discussions about radio, music, grind, and more. Here’s a tip for budding musicians, create content and keep grinding, my G! There's more on his Youtube.

Dambe is a traditional Nigerian martial art from the North. Small arenas pop up all over Nigeria, like this one in Abuja. Here contenders, some as young as 12, will gather and smear their hands in red dye. Small quranic verses sealed in small leather pouches are then wrapped into rope that is then wrapped around the punching arm. The fighters then step onto the sand pitch and continuously strike each other on the head until a winner is announced. @frvralien, @frvralien and Barbara drove a few times to witness this spectacle. What a rush! A short film is coming soon. PS Although I usually photograph with my @sonyalpha I wasn't able to on the first day, hence these photos are all taken with my @apple Iphone 13pro (very happy with the result).
