My freshman year of college, my hitting coach told me I was not allowed to pull the ball, I was only allowed to work to the opposite field. This approach was crucial in my development as a hitter because I learned to work inside the baseball and drive the ball Oppo, and I could wait longer than the normal hitter to make my swing decisions, which is why over my entire career I have more walks than strikeouts.

Thinking about hitting the ball oppo results in a good swing path which keeps your bat in the zone for a long time. It also keeps you under control so that you’re not trying to hit homeruns and pulling off everything, swinging and missing with the added adrenaline of the game.

For all hitters, especially power hitters, there are definitely times to get the head out. But if you think about doing damage out front while still keeping your hands short inside the baseball, that’s where you’ll have the best results.

Most athletes chase the highlight. The ones who last chase the standard.

Build a process so strong that success looks inevitable in hindsight. Then keep living that way after the lights move on.
