On September 20th, 2024 @ofrendafest hosted an event at the Queens Council of the Arts where they featured a carpet designed by Nixiwaka Yawanawa, an incredible artist from the Yawanawa Tribe of the Brazilian Amazon. Our partnership began years ago when Nina Tushev introduced us to Tashka Peshaho Yawanawa, the Chief of the tribe. This meeting would be the catalyst that opened the door for meaningful connections and discussions with him, his wife Laura Yawanawa, and the community itself.
Through collaboration and conversation, we developed the idea to create carpets made from sustainable materials that showcase the artist Nixiwaka’s creativity and the sacred symbology of his people. The featured carpet, titled “Shumu: The Sacred Pot,” embodies the significance of the Shumu, a sacred vessel used by shamans for healing and prayer. Inside the pot, a brew made from cassava. Additionally, the Shumu is used as a horn to call the community together, with the snake symbolizing wisdom and the Ayahuasca leaves honoring traditional spiritual practices.
This piece draws inspiration from traditional artistry such as body painting, weaving, and beading. Proceeds will support the Yawanawa Tribe and raise awareness for the Amazon and its Indigenous protectors.

Revisit this video of a conversation between the artist Simon Mullan and the founder of Equator Production, Petra Maria Singh, which we produced and filmed for Dittrich & Schlechtriem’s ‘15 Minutes’ series. The two discuss Mullan’s practice and the concepts behind the works in ‘Spacers,’ his past show at Dittrich & Schlechtriem, which consisted of a construction of 58 wall-mounted hand-carved stone crosses, specifically sized and spaced on the four walls of the room.

Until October 8, 2023, you can see Mullan’s new works in the exhibition ‘Halbe Halbe’ at Hermetika in Berlin, alongside new pieces by Martin Grandits. This two-artist show is described by Hannah Weidner as “a reflection of the fast-paced and burnt-out, chasing the chimera of satisfaction.”

Here’s another carpet I curated for @equatorproduction By #emilioprini. It took two years. Was based on his bathroom mat. Standard size. Natural color. Kind of a joke on Fontana, Manzoni, Castellani. More of a tribute. A carpet or an artwork? The real life dimension. Unique, wool, handmade in Kathmandu. Italian curatorial support (wonderful) by a team we referred to as #goldenruler Photographed by me in the Harlem townhouse where Equator was based. Exhibition of artist’s carpets opening 7 August at Princess Beatrix House, Hudson, NY, organized by @petragrunertsingh and her sister, Tanja, and John Lee. Featuring Equator and @bravinleerugeditions
