25 years ago today, Fu Manchu released their 6th album, which was their last with Brant Bjork. The Matt Hyde helmed California Crossing was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys. The 11 song collection (12 in Japan) was met with positive reviews and, for a lot of people, was their introduction to the band. I didn’t start managing these guys until 5 years later, but I’ve had the honor of working on 2 amazing things for this release. 1) “Mongoose” was licensed for a Toyota tv spot that aired during the Super Bowl. 2) We put together a Deluxe Edition triple LP with both sets of demos that were done in preparation for this album, which include the previously unheard compositions, “Foot Down & Low” and “Go For It.” Fun fact: Keith Morris contributed lead vocals on “Bultaco.” 1st pressing limited edition gatefold splatter 3LP. #fumanchu #fumanchuband

25TH ANNIVERSARY

Fu Manchu - California Crossing (2001)
Mammoth
Favourite Track: Hang On

Fu Manchu, the AC/DC of Stoner Rock, have been delivering essentially the same album for over 40 years, but why fix something that ain't broke!

My first Fu Manchu album was 1997's 'The Action Is Go' with its era defining sleeve artwork, 'California Crossing' was my second purchase....both remain my favourites in their catalogue.

Their albums are just so huge and all consuming, once the needle hits the groove, you're in and hooked; nothing is tearing you away. Guitars pummel you into submission, the vocals are otherworldly...and the hooks are insistent.

It's been 25 years since this album was released and it still kicks my ass every time.

The Action Is Go is the fourth album by Fu Manchu. It features new drummer Brant Bjork from Kyuss and new lead guitarist Bob Balch, replacing Eddie Glass and Ruben Romano who left to form the band Nebula. The album was produced by Jay Noel Yuenger of White Zombie, who contributed some additional instrumentation.

Anyone see the reference in the video? If not then it’s towards the movie over the edge good film if you’ve seen it then you’ll get the idea where the video comes from if not watch the film I recommend it.
