Not me holding (one of) my free expo drinks and swag-hauling bag! 😅 @the_modern_mortician got waaaayyyy more swag than my team, though… Go check out the reveals on their page!

Folks, let me be real, I’m still not caught up on all my connections because I am going through a major life transition right now. It’s a good thing, but I’m ludicrously busy.

In the meantime, please give me some distractions while I figure out what kind of content you want on this page!

I welcome you to INTRODUCE YOURSELF! 🥰 How did you get to this page, and what do you want to see? I’ll start… I’m Kellen (she/they); I created this page because I’m both a hard-working end-of-life professional, and a human who has grief and needs of their own. NOW YOU GO…

Have you ever had a morbid curiosity about what it's like to be in a disaster? A hurricane, a plane crash, maybe even the end of the world... Well, observing the 2019 DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) / FEMORS (Florida Emergency Mortuary Operations Response System) training in Miami gave a pretty realistic sense of what that feels like!

Staged in and around a vacant auditorium on a MDC college campus, run completely on generators, and utilizing both dummies and real human cadavers, the teams created a drill responding to a contaminated mass fatality event. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, complex systems were set up in an easy to navigate way.

Bordering the "hot zone" were staging areas for responders to organize, dress, and decontaminate. There was even a small chapel (called the He-Brews Cafe, very clever) where responders could cool off, read or hear recordings of spiritual literature, pray, speak to a chaplain, have snacks and coffee, and support each other.

Inside, there was a morgue with several stations including pathology, DNA, anthropology, odontology, radiology, photography, fingerprints, and more. These units work together to identify remains, match amputated body parts, and thoroughly document everything. All of this information is sent over to the MIC (Morgue Identification Center) where people sort and organize incoming info, and coordinate with the VIC (Victim Identification Center) to identify remains.

The VIC is located away from the disaster site. Family members and friends of potential victims can come and describe people who may have been involved. For example, if someone describes a heart shaped tattoo on a left arm, the MIC can match that with data from the photography center in the morgue to make an ID. People can also bring in toothbrushes or hairbrushes to test DNA against unidentified victims.

Not all states have their own volunteer emergency response teams, does yours?
