POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Our beloved fungi kingdom sustains essential ecological processes, yet they remain underrepresented in conservation, restoration, planning, monitoring, and environmental policy.

From culinary and medicinal treasures to hidden ecological networks, fungi connects life in extraordinary ways. Take Pycnoporus coccineus a.k.a Scarlet Bracket a striking wood-decay fungus with vivid scarlet-orange, fan-shaped fruiting bodies that help break down dead wood and recycle nutrients.

Fungi deserve more than a place in the conversation. They need dedicated conservation strategies and sustainable policies that recognise their unique roles in biodiversity.

As COP17 is taking place a pledge is being promoted, let’s hope the fungal kingdom finally gets the recognition it deserves. 🍄🌱

Deep in the native forest, in the shade of a young Hualle tree (Nothofagus obliqua), the Digüeñes appear — small golden spheres the earth offers for only a few weeks each year. They can be prepared in countless ways, but for me nothing beats a good Digüeñe ceviche: freshness, lime, red onion, and a touch of cilantro that brings out their wild flavor. Beyond being a delicacy, they’re a real nutritional gift from the southern forest. A tradition that connects generations, harvested with respect and enjoyed slowly.

Ever wonder how those meaty, umami-packed, nutritious mushrooms make it from the farm to your fork? Mushrooms boast a unique growing process that’s unlike any other fruit or vegetable you’ll find in the produce aisle. That’s because mushrooms are technically considered fungi unlike plants, mushrooms lack chlorophyll to make their own food through photosynthesis and instead exist on a substrate of organic material. Grown indoors on a year-round cycle, mushroom farm tour @shroomshackbytmc participant can experience

1. Making the Mushroom Bed

2. Spawning

3. Incubation and Pinning

4. Harvesting

It’s growing faster than a condo going up in downtown Toronto😅

Every time I ook at it, the mycelium’s like, “All good, eh — just growing.”
-Meanwhile I’m debating if I should shovel the driveway or pretend it’ll melt. One of us is thriving, and it’s not me.😂

Say hello to the porcini, also known as Boletus edulis or the “king bolete.” This mushroom isn’t just delicious — it’s a forest powerhouse! 👑

Porcini form underground partnerships with trees, trading nutrients through a web of mycelium. This teamwork helps forests stay healthy and thriving. 🌲💚

In the kitchen, they’re famous for their nutty, meaty flavor — most often enjoyed cooked in risottos, soups, or sauces across the world.

Fun fact: while many porcini caps average around 7–25 cm, some giants can stretch close to 30 cm across in rare cases!

Phallus spp.

Commonly known as the Veiled Lady or Bamboo Fungus. Its unique lacy skirt (indusium) makes it one of the most beautiful and rare fungi found in tropical forests. Beyond its enchanting appearance, it plays an important role in nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter. A true masterpiece of fungal biodiversity! 🍄🌿”

I don’t understand why labs are developing synthetic meat replacements when nature grows the most incredible tasting equivalents in the form of mushrooms…

Chicken of the woods tastes like chicken… lobster mushroom tastes (and kind looks) like lobster… beefsteak mushroom like beef (or raw tuna) and shrimp of the woods tastes like shrimp…

These mushrooms are packed with nutrients and taste incredible. Many of these can’t be cultivated (only foraged) as of yet! 😉🍄

Foraging is such a worthwhile pursuit for many reasons, as beneficial to our own health as it is to that of our environment. It is ingrained deeply in our primitive roots and as you begin to pay closer attention to the plants that surround us, you may begin to experience a connection that could be described as mystical!

Learning to forage is not something to be rushed. Indeed, it is not about the destination but the journey, and the slower the journey, the greater the reward.
Natures pace is much slower than our usual rush of modern society and when you allow yourself to be guided, she will be your best teacher.
