With the exception of a cute little perky, one of the minerals I had yet to add to my collection was topaz. An aluminosilicate mineral that is found in many parts of the world, topaz is commonly used in jewelry due to its vitreous luster. Like many minerals, due to sun exposure and time, its natural hue will fade and appear colorless. However, it can also be treated to alter its color to many different options. An example of this is heat treating the topaz to turn it a beautiful deep blue (London Blue) or applying a thin layer of titanium (Mystic topaz).

Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah is one area that you can find perfect examples of topaz with its true color, a stunning sherry or amber. In Juab County, topaz is often found with its host rock rhyolite, a volcanic rock that resembles white clay. Topaz is often associated with other minerals like red beryl, bixbyite, quartz, garnet, and specularite, which all formed in gas filled cavities as the rhyolite cooled post volcanic activity. Rhyolite can often be found inside and around the topaz, but less commonly, you might find topaz alongside its secondary minerals.

This piece is a great example of topaz with not only rhyolite inclusions, but with bixbyite and hematite that pseudomorphed (replaced) garnets. Finding pieces like this is extremely rare and if you look online, many are already owned by some the world’s best collectors or are being sold by top dealers, like @arkenstone_minerals .

Thanks to my friends at @funkycrystals I was able to obtain this KILLER piece and I couldn’t be more grateful.
