We sat down with 90 six-year-old Master Barber, Mrs. Ereline Holloway Gibson to discuss her story barbering. Mrs. Gibson was born on December 14, 1929 in Giddings, Texas. She dedicated to attend Barber college in the 1940s while in Fort Worth, helping her sister and newly born ciao. According to Mrs. Gibson, she became bored and saw advertisement for Barber school and decided that what she wanted to do. She attended Barber College in Fort Worth and travel to Tyler Barber College in Tyler, Texas, where she took her board exam to become a Barber. Mrs. Gibson decided to return to Austin and apply her trade. She remembers Mr. Galloway of ideal BarberShop driving her around to different barbershops in the area. Her first BarberShop was Tim’s BarberShop located at 1209 Chicon St. Mr. Timmons, an older gentleman and Musician originally from Saint Simmons Island, Georgia, taught Mrs. Gibson a lot about barbering. Being a Lady Barber, and Mrs. Gibson‘s prefer to labor herself, brought it on unique challenges. She remembers some male customers we just get her chair to flirt. And one instance, a customer who didn’t respect the process and decided to speak through his shave with Mrs. Gibson straight razor, as she didn’t use a safety razor she let it lick him. She said the customer attempted to blame her for cutting him, but she replies, saying he cut himself because he was talking. Mrs. Gibson was not the only black woman Barber in Austin. In fact, there are many black women who went into bar careers. There were even black women in Austin who owned barbershops. Mrs. Gibson remembers Mrs. Randolph, Randolph BarberShop at 1214 Sitcom St. and Margie‘s barbershop at 1701 Rosewood Ave. Over the course of her career, Mrs. Gibson was voted the president of the Texas Association of tonsorial artists where lead the association and holding Barber bowels, Barber’s conventions in Austin and elsewhere. This interview is part of documentary that is being created by @funmi_ogunro and @javierwallace512 512 to tell the story of Deal BarberShop Austin‘s oldest standing Black on BarberShop and Black businesses at E. 12th St. & Chicon! #barbersinctv
