A film I designed called "Orion" is out in theaters today. We shot this in Syracuse NY in 2024. The before times. This one allowed me almost total creative freedom which made it a truly memorable experience. A huge thanks to some of the key players, namely director @jacobouwer whose calm demeaner and intelligent attention to detail was a refreshing change of pace. Also the extremely gifted DP @dkruta ,whom I met on this job, became an immediate ally and I truly enjoyed my calloboration with both him and Jaco. If you know anything about me you know its art over everything. Those 2 operate on the same vibration making this 2 month experience quite intense. Also huge thanks to producer Sunil Perkash @sunilperkash whose passion for this project could not be contained. I tried. You can't contain it. Plus the man has a gift with starting great conversation, a rarity. Also in order, huge thanks to my crew. I pulled in 2 amazing young ladies that I had met on a tv show in NYC the previous years, set dec Sara Briggs @trisaraitops and art coordinator Lisa Fortino @lisassy4tiny. They took the opportunity and absolutely killed it. THANK YOU. Also want to thank a young man who likes to call himself Michael Joseph Bowen @michaeljosephbowen for stepping up into the art director role and befriending a welder with a shop who was 200 yards from the stage. Crucial. I would draw things to be welded and Michael would show up with them an hour later. I miss that. I will post a few different things in the coming weeks from this film but as a starting point here is "The Instrument". I began developing this idea in ZBrush early on. The limitations of a tight budget require digging deep, or in this case, carving foam. I had a legendary master carver at my side by the name of Nikolay Mikushkin who guided me through this process. Eternally grateful for that connection, friendship, and transfer of knowledge. More to come and thanks again to everyone involved. 🖤

Almost every fixture you see in the film is doing double duty as production design. The lighting and the architecture are inseparable. The hexagon over the lab is Aputure Infinibars. Every door has an Aputure MC Pro in its lock, cued from red to green and back as the door opens and closes. It’s another way to show that the facility is being controlled remotely. Apollo is locked in, but the locks themselves are being switched from somewhere else. In the flashbacks, Creamsource SpaceX units are in-frame practicals, paired with the Lomo Square Fronts for their horizontal flare. Those same units also live in the lab and Sonic Chamber. In the Sonic Chamber, the single beam onto the plinth is a DeSisti Muses of Light Aurea, from the LED series DeSisti developed with Vittorio Storaro and Francesca Storaro. For the Sonic Chamber, we needed one source, one beam, one moment of revelation, and we needed it to live in frame as a production design element at the same time. If this alien communicates through electromagnetism, through forces we can’t see, then we need a way to render electromagnetism. Ferrofluid responds to magnetic fields in real time. It moves; it almost thinks. That’s what we needed. After initial tabletop tests at home, I built out a small lab space next to the stage. It was a whole little mad scientist setup. Soldering iron, jugs of liquids, wires and cables, speakers, petri dishes, medical lab gear. DC voltage regulators powering electromagnets, so I could gently dial the strength up or down, or turn things on and off and have the fluid react more violently. It wasn’t just for ferrofluid; that’s where most of the on-the-fly practical effects experimentation happened. The probe shots are the Laowa 24mm T8 2X Macro Pro2be kit. The ferrofluid ended up in the film both as inserts and as the underlying texture that VFX referenced when building the alien itself. I love doing SFX work. It’s all the same instinct as cinematography. Slide 10 is Fudge, Pete Farnsworth’s dog, checking his reflection in the plinth. The trailer for ORION is out. Jaco Bouwer (@jacobouwer) directs. Andrew McCarthy (@andrewtmccarthy) plays a NASA interrogator working on an astronaut (@drewvanacker) who crash-landed as the only survivor of his crew. Written by Anne Vithayathil. I was DP, and received the special effects supervisor credit for the practical work. Most of what looks like VFX isn’t. The black liquid is ferrofluid moved with electromagnets. The standing ripples in the Sonic Chamber are bass inductors mounted under the plinth, tuned to the resonance of that surface and cued from my phone during the take. The flashbacks are on the Lomo Square Front anamorphics I’ve owned for almost twenty years, the same series Vadim Yusov shot Solaris on. The floating alien-POV moves are a 1961 Canon 50mm "Dream Lens" f/0.95 wide open on a hand-swung mini technocrane, with Moose pulling focus at working distances down to half an inch.
