POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Every year at the @fureviewberlin, before any submissions, selections or editing takes place, we pick a theme, usually one word. i then spend 6 months to a year arguing in my head about what it actually means. usually toying at some point with the idea that maybe nothing means anything anyway (crisis), before it all comes together and i fall back in love.

These are shots from the editor's note written by Liza and myself for our 12th issue last year, where we reflected on the theme DIRT and our responsibility as editors. as well as part of Anne Carson's essay Putting Her in Her Place, which inspired me a lot during that time (final slide). Writing IS dirty. I suspect editing might be too.

This evening made me fall in love with words x1000000. Here are shots from our (@fureviewberlin) DEVOTED reading event last month at @shakespeareandsons berlin. Never not grateful to have the honour of bringing people together, to share the texts that have formed us, talk about conflict, nothingness, breakfast, the point of poetry.

So grateful to everyone who came down and especially to our readers, who all shared texts i keep coming back to. @katarina.gotic @of.seatides
@giulia.ottavia.frattini @ruth.wish @giulianakiersz

I didn't write this (WISH!!), but pictured is Alice Notley's Culture of One (fragments read by katarina) (and me holding our DIRT issue like a newborn). 💞

FU Review’s 12th issue, DIRT, is out!

During the creation of this issue-reading, reviewing, editing, ordering, typing, staring, whatsapping (big etc here)-dirt got stuck in me.

On the surface, dirt signals sinks and secrets and mud. But it’s more, I think, about encountering the other. Facing the object that causes discomfort, that is used up or broken or out of place. The grief, the chaos. The stranger, the mistake. The person whose proximity feels like slime, on skin, threatening to unseat the self whose shifting borders we are told to fear. The emotion we want to “clean” from ourselves, or else we stay dirty.

The poetry, prose and art in this issue are so special, and explore all these questions and sensations with vulnerability and humour and more. I hope you buy it and read it and drop it and write all over it! Like other creative works, see it as an invitation to put your phone down and sit with a mind different from your own. And with your own quiet dirt.

Thank you to our wonderful team, especially @lizard.tattoos my co editor in chief. To everyone who submitted, to our designers and publishers, our wonderful authors, and @anoushapayne for providing her beautiful art to feature in the issue and letting me create a unique sort of interview/creative prose piece with her words.

Available on our website and in bookstores across Berlin 🖤

Happy to share that I have a prose poem, "The way time warps in a South Indian hamlet" in Berlin-based literary journal, @fureviewberlin . It appears in their eleventh issue with the theme "Still."🌌

STILL, the eleventh issue of FU Review Berlin @fureviewberlin , is finally out. Proud to have contributed to the editorial design of the indepent literary journal with my partner in crime @eleonoratoniolo
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Remember that STILL is not always quiet. Find STILL in the way the narrator seems to catch his breath. Look for STILL in the vastness of the landscape, the unspoken words, and in the way the language seems to slow down time. Find STILL even in the continuity of chaos, unnoticeable only because it takes up the entire room."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this issue, the digital artworks of Tabitha Swanson @tabithaswanson_ accompany the poetries and proses of Aya Al-Telmissany, Christian Beltran, Gamze S. Saymaz, Kitty Doherty, and Moses Hubbard.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Editors in chief: Elif Çakmak, Elizabeth Schippers
Editorial design: Benedetta Pompili, Eleonora Toniolo

Special thanks goes to the JFKI Alumni Association, whose generous support made this publication possible. Printed in Berlin on recycled paper.

Looking back at "FU Review 10: Restoration", while working on the upcoming issue.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FU10 contains a selection of Audrey Lorde's touching letters and poetries from the University Archive of the Freie Universitat Berlin. The publication hopes "to encourage others to explore and examine Lorde’s writings, correspondence, and lectures in future projects." It was our design choice to keep the scans of the original untouched.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Visual works by filmmaker @lemohang_jm
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The archival documents accompany new writings from Eric Abalajon, Indie Laras Bacas, Victor F. Breidenbach, Onyedikachi Chinedu, Iva Damjanovski, Taiwo Hassan, Shalom Kasim, Yaa Konadu, Arbër Selmani, Charika Swanepoel, Ilias Tsagas, and Allison Whittenberg.

Family, hark my imminent arrival—only some days until the first single from my album WINTERSKIN drops Friday 7th July! It would mean the world if you hit follow on Spotify—Otis Mensah & presave the single (link in bio). The last few weeks have been a beautiful excursion, my new sound-piece and poem is a part of an incredible solo exhibition by @kedishacoakley at @blocprojects, I read poetry in Berlin for @fureviewberlin, performed in UK with @komidashi & @snazzback, shot some music visuals with @jamalsterrettphoenix, @rae.de.soleil and @darshangajjar and visited my billboard-poem that’s on exhibition now outside @blocprojects—a beautiful collaboration with @steph_oconnor, @caermelonae, @jessica_lily94.

This journey is formless and the song dropping Friday w @lekkercollective is one of my proudest melodies yet.

Love—Otis.

A few favorite spreads from "Restoration", the Issue N10 of FU Review Berlin, which I co-designed with @eleonoratoniolo
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The theme for this issue of the journal is inspired by Audre Lorde’s poem Restoration: A Memorial - 9/18/91, a poem written in Berlin, in which she reflects on life in the island of St. Croix in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. Issue 10 features previously unreleased work by Audre Lorde, which is drawn from the Audre Lorde Archive at the Freie Universität Berlin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These archival documents accompany new writing from Eric Abalajon, Indie Laras Bacas, Victor F. Breidenbach, Onyedikachi Chinedu, Iva Damjanovski, Taiwo Hassan, Shalom Kasim, Yaa Konadu, Arbër Selmani, Charika Swanepoel, Ilias Tsagas, and Allison Whittenberg.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Issue 10: Restoration also includes a selection of visual works by filmmaker Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese.
