Most people think of northern lights and picture deep snow. Some of my best aurora nights happened in fall.

Back in 2022 I finally made it to Swedish Lapland, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Golden birch forests during the day, and one night we got hit by a full-blown aurora storm. The whole sky was moving. We were lucky to be out with a local photographer who knew exactly where to go, and standing under that sky at his favourite spots was a dream.

Why the in-between seasons are so good for aurora:

🌌 Dark nights are back. From late August the sky gets dark enough again, while the weather is still mild enough to stay out for hours.
⚡ Geomagnetic activity tends to peak around the equinoxes in September and March, which often means stronger displays.
🪞 Lakes and rivers aren’t frozen yet, so you get those perfect aurora reflections.
🍂 Fall colours in the foreground turn a good aurora shot into a unique one.

If you’re planning a trip:

📱 Use an aurora forecast app, but check the cloud cover too. Clear skies matter more than a high Kp.
🌲 Get away from towns and lights. Even a short drive makes a huge difference.
🧭 Go with a local guide or photographer at least once. They know the dark spots, the compositions and when it’s worth waiting.

“Romania in Colour”, @sonyalpha Kando ’26.

First and most important question: are there any rules when it comes to nature photography? If so, I’m afraid I broke every single one of them with these edits. During these edits, I often found myself thinking about my grandfather, who used to do a lot of nature photography. He’s no longer with us, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t approve of the way I’ve given nature’s colours my own interpretation, hahahahaha.

I’ve always been a bit of an odd bird, even back in school. Spending the past week surrounded by a whole flock of fellow odd birds felt incredibly good. The images they create and the things they achieve are insane. Insane thank you for letting me be part of it, Sony!

And hahahaha, ever since I started letting you decide the order of my posts, my life has become so much easier. The results are often surprising, which is exactly why I love it.

One more week of going full throttle, and then I’m retreating into my editing cave, with Ben Howard, RY X and The War on Drugs on repeat. I need it.

@sony.benelux KANDO 2026 in rural Romania is a wrap. Feeling so fortunate to be a part of this incredible group of photographers and filmmakers.

From feeling quite insecure, to coming home with tons of new ideas and motivation… ➡️

For a while Ive been feeling creatively blocked. Some of my main worries before going on this trip were that I wasnt up to the level of some of the attendees.

Funny enough, within minutes of coming together this feeling fades, and stoke and excitement takes its place.

Being surrounded by 30 pro photographers and filmmakers is not something you do daily, so having conversations about the struggle is so valuable. Helps realise youre not alone.

What inspired me most, was that we’re pointing the camera to the same object, from almost the same identical angle, yet everyone comes home with totally different shots.

None of us were true wildlife/bird photographers, yet everyone pushed boundries and came home with amazing photos, videos and memories.

Also incredibly funny to see so many nerds together. 🤣

My boat was also highly motivated.

We also got to experience some local music and dance, which was surprisingly fun and entertaining!

We were followed everywhere.

Enjoyed some amazing views, in a country you’d rarely visit yourself.

Enjoyed some proper company!

4 days in Romania with Sony Benelux. 🇷🇴📸

Sony Kando 2026 took us to the Danube Delta a trip I’ll definitely never forget.

I stepped outside my comfort zone, discovered wildlife photography, experienced a little more of Romania and, most importantly, met some amazing people and made new friendships.

Very grateful to have been part of this creative group. A big thanks to the other creatives for the good conversations and ofcourse thanks to the amazing @sony.benelux team for organising this trip💙
