Attention Is Design: What Art Can Teach Us About Attention

What if every space invited us to pay attention?

Over more than three decades working with artists, architects, and museum audiences, Heidi Zuckerman has discovered that the most memorable experiences are not simply designed—they are invitations to notice. Artists have a remarkable ability to reveal what has been there all along, changing not only what we see but how we see.

Drawing on stories from creating the Aspen Art Museum with architect Shigeru Ban, curating Olafur Eliasson’s first New York museum project, and collaborating with artists to bring art into unexpected places, Heidi explores how attention can be intentionally designed. She shows how artists create the conditions for curiosity, discovery, and connection, offering lessons that extend far beyond museums.

Whether designing buildings, products, workplaces, technologies, or communities, the question is the same:

What kind of attention does this space make possible?

I did a recent talk with @future_spaces about interesting dynamics I regularly witness in Rigamajig workshops for both kids and adults.

Some play types don’t always look “playful” at first glance. But they're not the opposite of play, they’re just different ways of playing. And they show us how we can work better together.

A few years ago we made our process document public and the number one question we got was – WHAT THE HECK ARE MOVES??

Making Moves is our attempt to answer that question. @charamelody and @mikesmith are hopping on a call with @future_spaces to go over our favorite moves and how we approach them.

Catch the live convo on Thursday, Sept 25th at 2pm ET (11am PT)

RSVP at the link in our bio.

Too many apps are built to trap people in dopamine loops.

What if they helped us engage more deeply with the world, build communities, and enrich our lives?

That’s what we’ve been exploring with Artwrld. And this week on Futurespaces I’m hosting Will Simon to dive in.
We’ll talk about:
• Lessons from Headspace and AllTrails
• The scrappy early versions of Artwrld
• Missteps, pivots, and what’s next

Designing Artwrld with Will has been one of the most energizing projects I’ve worked on in years. It pulled me back into maker mode: shaping content, checking analytics, iterating until it works. It’s made me truly believe that digital products can improve lives.

Join us and add your voice to the conversation.
