#food
Not only for thought
But also the throat

The most basic of human needs
And fuel to our routine deeds
It's not only satisfying
But also nourishing

An agent for healthy people
But yet a hygienic cripple
Food dictates the city's Heath status
As well as decorating the dump sites

A resource that defies any other
Is increasingly becoming a friend to the stomach
Making water it's only brother
And the most reliable life hack

So let's talk of the world wide lockdown
Novelled by the virus breakdown
Let's talk of closed institutions
Non existent recreations
As we appreciate a continuous food distribution #hiddenflows

Central Market: Tunis, Tunisia. All that the Mediterranean has is on offer at the fish market of Tunis. The sounds of bartering, the coolness of the ice, the smell of the ocean all combine to make a visit to this market unique and memorable-

Central Market: Tunis, Tunisia. The Deglet Nour (finger of light) is one of the varieties of dates grown in Tunisia. In fact, Tunisia has over 50% of the world’s Deglet Nour population. Although a majority of these dates are reserved for export, this sweet snack from the edge of the southern dessert can always be found in markets across Tunisia. It’s said that just two dates will sustain a man for a day in the Sahara. •

Maasai Steppe: Arusha, Tanzania. There are few things better then to observe a master engaged in his work. The Maasai of Northern Tanzania measure their wealth in the size of their cattle and goat herds. They honor visitors with a special prepared meal of roasted goat. Everything, from the selection of the young goat, to the choosing of the wood, to the precise timing of rotating the meat over the coals is dictated by centuries of tradition and customs. Those customs are under threat as urbanization demands more land for cultivation of crops and suburban sprawl slowly eats away the savanna.

On the beach between Macassar and Muizenburg these fishermen were preparing for a big day out. There is a yellowtail run close to shore. They drop the net behind the waves with an old school ’skuit’ and literally pull thousands of fish out by hand.

Before this structurally compromised building was demolished, Thandi and others use to live here. She is originally from up-country, where ’mielie pap’ is part of the daily menu. Cooking over an open fire, on the streets of deep Woodstock, is her life.

Simba. In the heart of Pondoland, my craving for Simba chips led me to Zanokhanyo Store. A Spaza store, where locals stand in a queue to buy necessities like sugar, oil, amaRhewu and self-raising flour. Needless to say, Simba was not found, but instead a choice of locally produced Chippa Naks or Mama’s puffed corn.

To many, the old blue taxis represent a battered image of the city as stuck in the past instead of one attempting to transition to a modern and fresher city. Lately, the gov wanted to replace all of these.
For me, I am fascinated with them and driven in some really crappy ones. There are thousands of them. Why can’t they be renovated and celebrated as an icon of hope?
In the same vein, little mobile fruit vendors are using make-shift wheelbarrows to get around and sell good quality fruit and veg all over the city. They just blend into the fabric of the city. •

Jangwani: Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian. There is an area in modern day Dar es Salaam called #jangwani (Kiswahili for ‘in the wilderness’). It’s a river that empties into the Indian Ocean and creates a tidal wetlands that surrounds the city. In the past, this acted as a natural barrier between the busy city and the untamed wilderness. Progress brought roads and bridges and allowed the city to expand beyond jangwani. Today, urban sprawl is encroaching on this once uninhabitable area. Small farms of corn, tomatoes and papaya can be seen side by side new housing developments. Now, issues of over farming, over crowding, pollution, erosion and seasonal flooding threaten jangwani in an irreversible way. •
