“Condor or cod, grassland or glacier: we do what we can, but the holes in the dyke outnumber the available thumbs.” - Nick Paumgarten Out this week in @newyorkermag’s 100th Anniversary issue, Nick Paumgarten and @matiasdepardon dropped into our film crew’s attempt to capture the “quixotic effort” of a human-led migration at the crux of our journey, in the Pyrenees. Just over two years ago @tyschiff and I met for a coffee in Venice and he showed me some footage of a microlight leading birds through the Alps. He said he’s working on making a feature documentary and asked, “would you want to shoot it?” Without hesitation, I said yes. My dreams of shooting for the BBC’s Natural History Unit had always held a sort of glamorous idea of sweating it out in a blind for weeks trying to capture elusive wildlife or dangling out the side of a helicopter. Tyler’s story had both. My dream shoot. So last summer, our small crew of 6 set out for a 75 day shoot to capture this true-to-life “Fly Away Home” story. Nick writes a brilliant account of our efforts, and more importantly the “Fervor and Futility” of the @waldrappteam‘s devotion. All of it offers a sneak-peek into what will soon be a feature film, produced by a stellar line-up of production partners:  @artistsequity, @insigniafilms, @fifthseason, and @sandboxfilms. This one ranks up there with the most memorable shoot of my life - endless thank yous to @tyschiff for your vision and relentlessness to bring this to life. So proud of you! Congrats to Johannes Fritz (@eremita.2023) for the much-deserved feature and for your dedication to this project over the past 20 years. found this spot from a year or two ago on my hard drive. Don’t remember why it never made it to my website. interesting thing about this one is we wanted to introduce some anamorphic elements like oval shaped bokeh and anamorphic flares, which we ended up skipping out on for the final reveal. This one was fun to shoot on @hawkanamorphic lenses. For the luxury leather, pen and watch brand Montblanc, Hollywood filmmaker Wes Anderson directs and stars in a mountaineering movie in his familiar style (featuring Rupert Friend and Jason Schwartzman), while Christoph Waltz plays a tongue-in-cheek curmudgeon for energy company E.ON.
