Here’s what you should be doing:

1. Find a routine
Every kick should look identical, find a run up that works for you. Some prefer to walk, some run, some step back or to the side. It’s personal preference, just make sure it’s consistent!

2. Approach is key
Your approach is what makes a good kick. Keep on a straight line to bring your momentum straight through the ball, attack the ball on the last step to get your power, and get a solid plant for a base. If you are slow, off-balance and lazy in your approach then you won’t be able to control your kick and won’t get power.

3. Stay tall in the kick
Approach the ball tall and stay tall as you kick, your limbs are your levers and need full extension to maximise power. Push your chest out and stay upright as you kick to allow your leg the full range of motion.

4. Follow through your kick
After you make contact you need to chase your kick at least a meter past the ball to bring your momentum forward, if you stop as you kick then you will limit your distance and power.

5. Stay in the kick
Keep your head down as you kick and after you kick, it’s like golf. The longer you stay in the kick, the more control you have. The tendency is to look up at your kick, but this will limit your accuracy. Trust your process, and trust that you have kicked it well.
