Who is raising the children while their parents work two or three jobs?

Military veteran and retired Montgomery County fire captain Dave Kennedy, owner of Rec-Mode Fitness brings lived experience to that question. His father died when he was in fifth grade. His mother worked. The streets helped raise him.

At The State of Mid-County Communities Summit, his challenge was clear: officials say they love the work, but where is the funding? Black boys need mentors, and the people showing up for them need resources.

All I can think about is what if?

Our school district has not kept up with the educational needs of its community. It is still functioning as the Montgomery County of the past. Too many Black and non-native English speaking children cannot read.

If Black people are at the top, what is the problem? @zsj__40 co-founder and co-executive director of @racialjusticenow talks about her work and why she does it.

Many of the “Top Dogs” in leadership are Black in Montgomery County, MD. Elected officials, county, government directors, the Black who’s who occupy the top spaces.

Yet, only 38% of Black children are reading on grade level. Half of the defendants in our court system are Black. Black boys are 87% of those in juvenile detention centers. 50% of those counted as homeless last year were Black men.

No public outcry. Black people don’t matter.

The residents of Hillside Senior Living Apartments in Gaithersburg have something to say, and I want our community to hear them.

They will join us this Saturday at the State of Mid-County Communities Summit to talk about what aging in place actually looks like when residents face concerns about safety and building conditions and struggle to get timely responses.

Aging in place means more than being able to stay in your apartment. It means being safe, being heard, and being able to count on someone to respond when something is wrong.

Come listen to the people living this experience and help us ask what needs to change.
