“Escalate is a small video sculpture of an escalator with a never ending stream of people traveling somewhere unknown. I wanted to create an artwork that represents motion without progress, ritualized movement, migration and escape.”

Artist: @gabebc …this is amazing.

It started with Agog.

Last year, I was introduced to immersive storytelling at the inaugural Agog XR Creators Lab at ASU. Five months later, I was in the Dominican Republic experimenting with Gaussian splatting and capturing what would eventually become my first headset-free immersive installation, El Colmado del Futuro.

This summer, El Colmado del Futuro came to life as a full-scale Caribbean corner store, piloting for eight weeks at Cherry Street Pier in Philadelphia. And honestly, it has been nonstop from there.

I have fallen completely in love with immersive storytelling, with these tools, with their possibilities, and especially with the idea that we can go beyond the screen and transform physical space itself into a place where stories can live.

And now, somehow, the journey is taking me to Venice.

I’m incredibly honored to share that I’m heading to Venice Immersive, the immersive section of the Venice International Film Festival, this September as a fellow with Agog: The Immersive Media Institute.

This feels like such a beautiful full-circle moment. The community that first opened the door to immersive storytelling for me is now helping me walk through another one.

Venice, here I come. 🇮🇹✨

In ‘ESCALATE’, Gabriel Barcia-Colombo (@gabebc) turns the familiar rhythm of an escalator into a piece on routine, automation, and the uncertainty of where we’re headed.

The work invites us to consider what it means to keep moving in a world where the destination feels increasingly unclear.

The work captures what the artist calls 'motion without progress.' In an era defined by system collapse, algorithmic prophecy, and technology serving as an emotional prosthetic, these figures represent us all.

New York-based media artist Gabriel Barcia-Colombo explores what photographs, videos, and data left behind by people may become in the future. Embedding moving portraits inside familiar objects such as vintage televisions, clocks, bottles, eggs, and blenders, he transforms technology and human memory into sculptural forms.

His practice extends far beyond digital art. An Associate Arts Professor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and an educator in interactive media, Barcia-Colombo examines death, documentation, and collective memory in the digital age through video sculpture, large-scale public installations, and performance. As we generate thousands of photos and videos every day, he sees these records not simply as data, but as extensions of ourselves. In an era of endlessly consumed content, his work shifts the conversation from what we choose to record to the more fundamental question of how memory itself continues to exist.

This is the last weekend to experience the pilot version of El Colmado del Futuro at Cherry Street Pier.

Over the past two months, thousands of people have stepped inside this Caribbean corner store from the future. Seeing people laugh, reflect, share memories, and recognize pieces of themselves in this space has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

This project was never just about building an immersive installation.

It was about documenting cultural nuance. Preserving the spaces that shape us. Imagining what our communities might become while recognizing that we already have the tools to document our own stories, histories, and cultural identities before they become memory.

Tomorrow, I’ll be joined by filmmaker, photographer, and author Héctor Tapia Aguilar for a conversation about storytelling, community, and why preserving our histories matters now more than ever.

We’ll talk about our different journeys as artists, what inspired Nítido and El Colmado del Futuro, and how photography, film, and immersive storytelling can become living archives for future generations.

📍 Saturday, July 25
🕔 5:00–6:00 PM
📍 Cherry Street Pier | Philadelphia

Can’t make it to Philadelphia? We’ll be streaming the conversation live, and I’d love for you to join us from wherever you are.

Thank you to everyone who has visited, shared, volunteered, collaborated, and believed in this project. This pilot is just the beginning, and I’m excited to keep building what comes next.

—

What if the world had already changed? Would we even notice?

Fifty people are scattered across a vast desert.

One keeps digging a hole that leads nowhere. Another gambles. Someone practices yoga. Everyone is busy with their own routine.

Instead, the desert feels more like a state of mind.

A place where people have lost their sense of direction, repeating the same familiar routines over and over.

@gabebc titled the work Afterparty.

The party is already over.

No one ever left.

At the end, everyone suddenly stops what they’re doing and turns to face the camera.

@gabebc says it’s either an invitation to join the Afterparty—or a reminder that we’ve been part of it all along.

Maybe we were never just watching.
