This past Friday, Julie and I got an early look at the DIVA exhibition at the @denverartmuseum and it is a masterclass in stagecraft, identity, and haute couture. The exhibition explores how the world’s most transformative performers use fashion not just as wardrobe, but as a vehicle for cultural identity and personal brand DNA. Coming up on Season 2 of Catching the Editor’s Eye, we’ll sit down with curator Jill d’Alessandro to discuss the exhibition. Stay tuned for episode release dates! In the meantime, catch up on Season 1 on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. 1. Isadora Duncan, Fortuny Dress, c. 1920-23. 2. Josephine Baker coat, detail, 1960s, designer unknown. 3. In our Season 1 highlight series, we’re looking at how three industry voices define curation across heritage, personal expression, and the sales floor: · Erika Dalya Massaquoi @erikadalyamassaquoi @theoulacompany on designing for legacy, joy, and rewriting history. · Judith Boyd @stylecrone on personal style as an artistic composition. · Peter M. Taub @manoncactus_ on why retail sales associates are the ultimate curators of a brand’s narrative. In an industry obsessed with efficiency and productivity, it’s easy to forget what is actually important: human connection. Throughout Season 1 of Catching the Editor’s Eye, our guests proved week after week that real magic—creative intuition, customer understanding and loyalty, brand DNA—happens when people connect to other people. From Lori Kirkland discussing AI as a ‘creative co-pilot’ to Zang Toi’s decades-long commitment to his clients, human relationship is still fashion’s ultimate competitive edge. If you want to break through the fashion industry’s “sea of sameness,” you must have a point of view.” And that’s an official wrap on our debut season! Building Catching the Editor’s Eye has been an incredibly rewarding experience for my producer, Julie Bassignani, and me. To celebrate, we are stepping back to look at the major themes we’ve explored over our first eight episodes. In our Season 1 Retrospective, we bring together the practical wisdom shared by our incredible line-up of guests, pulling key takeaways into four essential pillars for independent founders and industry insiders looking to build brands with staying power. ✨The Human Spark: Why real, human relationships remain the absolute beating heart of luxury retail—from Zang Toi’s trunk shows to Matthew LeBaron’s focus on creative health and mental wellness. ✨ The Logic of Independence: Why throwing out the corporate playbook to maintain control over your own capital and creative vision is a highly successful business strategy. ✨ Curation over Sameness: Why data without an editor’s eye is just noise. Breaking through the crowd requires moving past spreadsheet-driven design and standing for a clear, defined point of view. ✨ Stewardship for the Future: Swapping corporate checklists for active stewardship. We explore what it looks like to build a cleaner fashion industry, from setting real boundaries for AI and adopting zero-waste local production, to using our wardrobes to speak up for what matters. A massive thank you to everyone who listened, subscribed, and built this community of substance with us. We are already hard at work putting together Season 2! “I think someone who is taking care of themselves first will always put their best work forward.” If you are an independent creator or founder, you already know the relentless demands of wearing every single hat. On any given day, you are the CEO, the strategist, and the accountant, all before you actually get to step into your creative space. In this week’s deep-dive essay on Substack, we look at Matthew’s blueprint for reclaiming your autonomy. We discuss why “getting the gig” is no longer enough, and how to manage the operational side of your business without letting it extinguish your creative spark. In today’s season finale of Catching the Editor’s Eye, I sit down with Matthew LeBaron, founder of Much Creative. Drawing on his deep pedigree at Bernstein and Andriulli, Matthew saw firsthand how the traditional agency model often falls short of serving the very talent it represents. He is now redefining the ecosystem for creative talent through artist coaching and community connections. For anyone wrestling with professional workplace challenges, from communication gaps to the fear of using AI, Matthew’s approach focuses first on relationship-building and wellness as the way to start moving forward. This conversation is a vital reminder that in a digital landscape, everyone needs genuine connection.
