What a way to end our Mozam Fam holiday having Trevor from @cuttacornermoz cook us prawns and barracuda that he caught himself. It was incredibly delicious and I would highly recommend it when you’re in Mamoli

When a new predator is introduced into a large wildlife area, the first few months are critical.

Understanding where she moves, how she uses the landscape, and how she adapts to her new surroundings provides invaluable information for the reserve’s wildlife management team.

A tracking collar is an incredibly powerful management tool. It allows conservation teams to monitor newly introduced animals across vast areas, understand their movements and behaviour, and make informed decisions while they establish themselves in their new environment.

But the goal is always the same — for the technology to eventually become unnecessary.

After months of monitoring and successfully settling into her new territory, the time came to remove the collar.

No more signal.
No more tracking.
No more technology.

Just a wild predator moving through a wild landscape, exactly where she belongs.

The collar is off. The wild is activated. 🐆

A huge thank you to @oppositelock_za for the smooth ride and for supporting the work that makes these conservation journeys possible.

This is what conservation looks like — giving wildlife the space, protection and opportunity to become wild again.

PROTECTING RHINO. BUYING TIME. 🦏

Another critical rhino dehorning operation — each rhino, a life worth protecting.

Rhino poaching remains an ongoing threat across Africa. For reserves facing this pressure, dehorning can form part of a broader, carefully managed security and conservation strategy designed to reduce the incentive for poachers to target individual animals.

Every operation is conducted by experienced wildlife professionals, with veterinary oversight and the animal’s welfare at the centre of the process.
The rhino is safely immobilised, horn removed, DNA samples taken, microchipped and returned to the wild.

No shortcuts. No unnecessary risk. No compromise on animal welfare.

Dehorning is not a silver bullet. A rhino without a horn can still be targeted, and the decision to dehorn comes with significant costs, logistics and risks.
But when combined with strong security, monitoring and conservation management, it can be one of the tools available to reserves fighting to keep these prehistoric giants alive.

Because conservation isn’t always about the picture-perfect moments.

Sometimes it’s helicopters, veterinary teams, dusty roads, careful planning and difficult decisions.

Sometimes protecting Africa’s wildlife means doing whatever responsible conservation measures are necessary to give them another day in the wild.

For the rhino. For the reserve. For the future.
