Four Australians competed at the Paris Grand Prix, one of the toughest events on the World Taekwondo calendar.

It was great to have @mattysummerfield and @xaviernikolovski both make their Grand Prix debuts, a reward after some good results in 2026.

Summerfield started off with a bang winning the opening round of his first GP match by point gap before his opponent made a respectable comeback. A strong start at this level for Matty nevertheless.

Nikolovski has had the breakout in 2026 we have been hoping for, he now knows where he needs to be to take his game to the next level.

@aiden.stilleh pushed hard through a tough contest, taking some great learnings out of this GP.

@gabyblewitt leaves Paris hungrier than ever to come back stronger.

Well done to all four athletes representing Australian at such a major event.

Spirit: Punching Above Our Weight.

@aus_taekwondo 2026 National Championships

This weekend, Spirit stepped up once again, proving that you don’t have to be a big fish to make a big impact.

There’s always a fine balance between pushing hard and burning out, but once again, our small team punched well above its weight — across a multitude of areas.

Event management. Refereeing. Volunteers. Assistant coaches. And, of course, our athletes.

Our young guns stepped onto the national stage and delivered some excellent performances, demonstrating just how much they have progressed and developed. They’re a glimpse of the next generation of Spirit athletes coming through — and there is plenty to be excited about.

Laurie Lawira, Spirit’s first Para athlete, also stepped onto the national stage, competing in AusTKD’s first official Para Taekwondo matchup. In a closely contested battle, both athletes traded blows throughout, with Laurie ultimately securing the gold.

It was a fantastic achievement for Laurie and an important moment for the development of Para Taekwondo in Australia, showcasing the talent, potential and opportunities this growing pathway has to offer.

Our seasoned athletes, Natasha and Samantha, continue to go from strength to strength.

And Sammy once again claimed the title for the second consecutive year, cementing her dominance not dropping a single round in Australia throughout 2026.

These performances was Spirit finish with 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze medals, which is an excellent result and a great reflection of the hard work, commitment and development of our athletes.

SBN @gabyblewitt was crowned Australian Senior Athlete of the Year after an incredible first year as a senior. Following her momentous podium finish at the World Championships late last year, along with a string of top tier results, this recognition is a fitting reward for an outstanding season.

And then there’s KJN @annemariegannon .

She has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to manage and orchestrate so much of what makes these events possible. Having had a front-row seat over the past few months, I cannot emphasise enough the countless late nights, early mornings, plann

The Senior Athlete of the Year is awarded for the most outstanding overall or one-off performance at an event and includes results at state, national and/or international events.

Gaby has had a year defined by gold — taking out the Indonesian Open and the Kimunyong Cup, with Silver at the US Open and Bronze at both the Australian Open and the Oceania President’s Cup. She’s also a 2025 World Championships Bronze medallist and two-time Best Female Athlete Award winner, with a dominant, aggressive style her peers say proves Australia can compete with anyone in the world.

Congratulations to Senior Athlete of the Year for Kyorugi, Gaby Blewitt!

This is the power of community engagement. From being inspired to becoming the inspiration✨

Before the medals, major competitions and big stages, VIS athletes were young with big dreams, inspired by the people and communities around them 💫

Now our VIS athletes are giving back by sharing their stories, experiences and lessons with the next generation. Through community programs they’re inspiring young people to dream big, believe in themselves and see what’s possible 🏅
