What a beautiful surprise to come upon a dramatic work of art by HVFA's Karin Broker on a visit over the weekend to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The small but important exhibition is Do No Harm: Artists Confront Health Crises, curated by Dena Woodall and Melinda Narro with special help from Rainey Knudson. Karin Broker's Exit Stage Left, from the Art Against AIDS Portfolio, depicts a skeleton striding away from a bowl of fruit and a floral bouquet emblematic of life and abundance. It is powerful, as are all the works in the show. 1. Karin Broker 2. Karin Broker, Eric Avery 3. Gail Siptak 4. William Steen 5. Michael Tracy 6. Keith Haring 7. Michael Bise 8. Eric Avery 9. Thank you Lena Young for highlighting some of Gail Siptak’s works. Instead of illustrations, Gail will be showcasing gouache paintings in her latest exhibition, Rescue, debuting tomorrow evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Join us for an opening reception with the artist.

Lena wrote:

“Gail Siptak is a wonderful American artist, whose paintings I have posted before. This time I am choosing her pen and ink drawings and more detailed works which I like very much.

Gail tells: ‘I paint to communicate what I see of human and animal condition in all its pathos and hilarity. I am fortunate to have a long career as an artist, exhibiting in galleries, museums and other venues in the U.S., France and Denmark, London and St Petersburg, Russia.’

‘Being a secret shy person I like to conjure stories from glimpses of life seen and overheard. I like incomplete stories, moments unresolved, experienced, read, remembered, witnessed. When I had so many of these pieces on my studio walls this past year it seemed I was looking at apartment building windows with bits and pieces of life. And I, the on looker.’”

koelsch gallery is pleased to announce a dual exhibition of works by Houston artists Gail Siptak and Kelly Moran. Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, September 10th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. As always, admission is free.

In Rescue, Gail Siptak illustrates people and animals of all sorts gathering and escaping dire situations aboard small boats, accompanied by birds and sea life along an ocean and sky that promise new life. Her gouache paintings are a kind of prayer in turbulent times to gather together and carry on. In Time Keepers, Kelly Moran displays her large-scale paper dolls and mixed-media assemblages of framed collages and globes. Throughout the works, she incorporates time-telling objects—evoking dialogue on time, how it is measured, and our relationship to it. Together, the two artists bring us into their imagined worlds, defined by personal whim, color, and character.

Rescue and Time Keepers will be on display through October 10, 2026.

Installation photos of Gail Siptak and Elana Wortham’s mural, The Magic Flute, based on the final opera of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The mural was completed on the third floor of a home in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood, for the owner favorited the opera and requested the mural for his grandchildren. These photographs are from over 15 years ago, around the time of its completion.

artist talk with gail siptak
saturday, october 12th, 4pm

in honor of her latest exhibition “fables”, gail siptak and koelsch gallery founder franny koelsch jeffries will host a Q&A centered around the artist’s recent debut, creative process, and career. join us for an engaging discussion between two figures of the arts community. attendees are encouraged to ask questions and participate at their choosing. admission is free.

in her tenth solo exhibition with koelsch gallery, gail siptak continues her prolific production of animal and animal-related portraits. a love for the natural world has manifested itself into a continuous cast of characters: giraffes, fishes, frogs, bears, birds, and more. whether on their lonesome or among each other, each character radiates a distinct and complex personality.
siptak withholds the ability to orchestrate complex yet subtle relationships between object and entity. various patterns and strokes of color create an illusion of movement. her marriage of cubism and medieval imagery hatch a dynamic arrangement of contrasting styles. the distinctive choice of gouache paint parallels that of egg tempera, the primary medium of byzantine-era illuminated manuscripts. it’s fast-drying nature grants siptak the capability to layer boldly. “gouache allows me to improvise. i seldom end up with what i started. it evolves.” @gailsiptak
