One more round of shots from last week's SF extravaganza, from two of our favorite chroniclers. Pics 1-7 and 15-16 are from @gailwithacamera, and 8-14 are from @kcamp7 - big thanks to both of you for all your incredible work throughout the years! Such a joyful night - we all had a blast. What an incredible audience! Huge thanks to Darrell and Kate for being part of the maelstrom. And to Scott and Laura for the practice space, and to Tony and Hisham and GAMH for all the logistics. So much love in that room!

“The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers.” #jamesbaldwin

Two books. Two conversations at Clio’s last week that, in very different ways, asked us to pay attention.

THE NERD REICH, with Gil Duran + Adam Becker, asked us to look closely at technology, power, ideology, and the people imagining and financing, particular versions of our future.

Then ART AGAINST BRUTALITY, with artist Claudia Bernardi in conversation with war journalist Mark Danner, turned toward communities that have experienced war, political violence, displacement, and loss ~ and what happens when people come together to make something from what remains.

Not to erase what happened, or even to heal it, but to give it form, make memory visible ~ and to insist that something, and someone, not be forgotten.

Perhaps that is one of the deepest powers of art: it allows us to carry what might otherwise disappear.

Across both evenings, I kept returning to the same questions: How do we pay attention to the world being made around us? How do we bear witness to what has already happened? And what can we make together from what has happened to us?

And the conversations continue at Clio’s…

Wednesday, September 16 · 7–9pm
@jennie.durant Bitter Honey, in conversation with @ucberkeleyfood Executive Director Jeanne Merrill.

Thursday, September 17 · 7–9pm
I’ll moderate writer @grantfaulkner + photographer @gailwithacamera on their new book, Something Out There in the Distance.

books as beginnings / hope to see you there / links for tix in bio ✨

Clio's is hands-down the coolest book bar in the country. I'm so glad that @gailwithacamera and I get to talk about our book, SOMETHING OUT THERE IN THE DISTANCE, with @cariborjafashionfilmfood there on Thursday, September 17.

We'll show Gail's photos. There might be a signature cocktail available. And then we'll all go on an aimless road trip together afterward.

Thanks to @megpokrass and her popular writing prompt newsletter for using one of the photos from "something out there in the distance" as her featured prompt this week.

The book is one part photo book— @gailwithacamera's road trip photos from the Southwest—and one part "flash novel" with my stories.

Write a 300-word story to this one.

I'm going to overuse the word "stun" in this post, but for good reason.

@ninaschuyler—of the Substack, "Stunning Sentences"—had stunning things to say in her analysis of one of my sentences from my book, SOMETHING OUT THERE IN THE DISTANCE.

She said things I didn't even know about my own writing. I've re-read it three times and have learned something new each time about how my own sentence works.

I also love how she says "each story feels like a postcard" because they're written to @gailwithacamera's photos.

Here's a bit about Nina's Substack: It is "not just close reading; it’s microscopic reading, belly-crawling along a sentence, feeling its rhythm and sounds and syntactical linearity and nonlinearity."

Here's the sentence she analyzed from my book: "You’ve just got to keep moving, looking for the next circus, dancing the next dance—because you can’t die when you’re laughing, you can’t die when you’re spinning around. Or that was Dawn’s theory."

When we get in the car and go, we are honoring something very old in ourselves: we belong most to what is fleeting.

When driving toward a horizon that keeps receding, you cannot quite believe in arrival. The next town is always the next town. The destination seems to always be an hour away.

You are always in the middle of the story on the road.

Getting lost makes you see something for the first time, every time. A place’s transience is the very substance of its beauty.

The anthropologist Kim TallBear has written about the way indigenous conceptions of land have always been formed in movement. To be in relationship with a place is to understand that you will eventually leave it, that the land does not belong to you, that you belong to the land only as a guest, not as a settler.
