Vanavond tussen 20:00 en 23:00 opent Creation Myths and Other Beginnings. Een tentoonstelling over niet-dominante scheppingsverhalen. Verhalen die via orale cultuur werden overgedragen van generatie op generatie of juist speculatieve, fictieve alternatieven.

Met werk van Mounira Al Solh, Yael Bartana, Louis Braddock Clarke, Yaïr Callender, Fiona Lutjenhuis, Claudia Martínez Garay, Narges Mohammadi, Nathaniel Mellors & Erkka Nissinen, Rithika Merchant, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, Selma Selman en Müge Yilmaz, en een tentoonstellingsontwerp van Zoë Hollander.

Tonight between 20:00 and 23:00 our new exhibition, Creation Myths and Other Beginnings, opens. Creation Myths and Other Stories explores non-dominant creation narratives – stories transmitted orally across generations, or speculative and fictional alternatives.

With work by Mounira Al Solh, Yael Bartana, Louis Braddock Clarke, Yaïr Callender, Fiona Lutjenhuis, Claudia Martínez Garay, Narges Mohammadi, Nathaniel Mellors & Erkka Nissinen, Rithika Merchant, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, Selma Selman and Müge Yilmaz and an exhibition design by Zoë Hollander.

“BRONZE & BONE”
Craft, brute force, and the discipline of permanence.

For Gravitas Issue 006, we enter the home and dual workshops of French sculptor Quentin Garel @quentingarel . Operating across a sharp threshold downstairs, Garel’s practice captures a profound paradox: on one side, quiet drafting tables where soft charcoal is mapped with surgical precision; on the other, the deafening roar of two-stroke chainsaws carving into raw timber.

Yet for Quentin, the tool changes while the intention remains identical. From apprenticing under his painter father to mastering industrial power tools on construction sites, he approaches monumental sculpture simply as drawing along a three-dimensional axis. Through elastomer molds and reactive acid patinas, his bronzes preserve the exact tactile memory of the cut, while his monumental animal skulls invert the historic logic of the hunter’s trophy: turning the beast into the cathedral itself.

Confronting the physical toll of scale at fifty and breaking down his recent Soho installation with Jacques Marie Mage, Garel unpacks why tangible presence, texture, and weight remain essential in a world swallowed by the screen.
