A biggun caught by my angler Dylan this week. He was able to get his biggest brown and rainbow all in a days work. Fall fishing in Montana!

I’ve been on the hunt for an ultra! Stoked to land this guy in the last few minutes of an all time day of fishing.

We completed our third year of monitoring aquatic insects on the Gallatin River, in collaboration with @gallatinrivertaskforce. We are grateful to all our volunteers who came out and made the project a success! Like many watersheds across the West, the Gallatin had a low snowpack this winter, so we were worried about what the state of the river would be in late August. Algae blooms - which deplete oxygen and smother insect habitat - are certainly one of the most critical threats to this river. While major blooms occurred in 2018-2022, we were happy to again see relatively little algae this year. In fact, algae was markedly less abundant than when we sampled in 2024-2025, likely because of recent rains and cloudy weather. At one point, the rain bumped up flows so much, we were unsure if we would be able to sample! Seeing all of this served as a good reminder – algal growth isn’t just about nutrient pollution, water temperature and sunlight are also critical drivers.

During our stay on the Gallatin, we were thrilled to hold yet another Angler Entomology Clinic, this time in collaboration with @gallatinrivertaskforce and @gallatinriverguides (Thank you!). We had a fantastic turnout and great questions, including about how to match the ‘hatch’ when adult insects aren’t out. We love sharing our bug knowledge and education with others. We hope you can make it to our next clinic!
