The Painter of Light

Capturing light seems to be the starting point of Omar Rodríguez-Graham’s work. Not simply to portray it or use it to give shape to space, but to follow it as it meets matter and transforms it. It is an age-old, almost impossible pursuit. Light can never truly be captured; it changes even as we look at it.

In Rodríguez-Graham’s works, light doesn’t seem to come from outside, neatly arranged and predictable. Instead, it appears to emerge from within the painting itself, slipping between layers, overlapping brushstrokes and dense patches of colour. At times, it comes through strongly; at others, it remains hidden beneath the surface, like an ember that is still glowing. Colour is no longer just decorative. It becomes something alive: spreading, pulling back and pushing against the colours around it. […]

$Fresh from Montréal, the latest paper issue of Espace Art Actuel’s magazine is here! Thank you Evgeniya Makarova and @espaceartactuel for featuring Sasha Roshen’s work in your thoughtful piece on Ukraine’s contemporary art 🇺🇦 GRILLES AFFECTÉES, AFFECTS QUADRILLÉS : L’ART CONTEMPORAIN EN UKRAINE EN TEMPS DE GUERRE by Evgeniya Makarova From street layouts and architectural plans to electrical networks, transport timetables, administrative spreadsheets, digital interfaces, GPS coordinates and QR codes, grids quietly organize the spatial and informational systems of modern life. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has made these underlying spatial logics suddenly visible: infrastructure is targeted and destroyed, missile strikes fracture urban grids and bureaucratic records log casualties and displacement. Under these conditions, the grid no longer appears merely as a set of abstract metrics; it emerges as a lived structure through which violence is organized and experienced. In their works, contemporary Ukrainian artists mobilize the grid to register this war’s distinct affective conditions: non-cathartic, ambivalent states that resist resolution and instead index suspended agency within administered environments. Dasha Podoltseva traces anxiety across monitoring systems, Sofiia Yesakova registers the procedural handling of loss, and Sasha Roshen evokes ambient tension within collective practices of survival. #SashaRoshen #GalleriaMacca #EspaceArtActuel$
