Two weeks ago my first solo exhibition, BONE DEEP, opened. Tomorrow is the final day of the show. I’ve been sitting with everything that’s unfolded since that opening.

It began with a strange vulnerability in letting the work leave the studio, after being with it so intensely and intimately for two years.

Then the blossoming delight of witnessing it be curated in such manner that I was opened to seeing new connections between paintings (thank you @sonia_pang).

There are the conversations it’s facilitated and the stories told. I never, for one, expected to meet someone who shared my fascination with chaos theory and the piece that that informed.

The precious, renewed, and new, connections with people who made the (short and long) trip to visit the show.

The quiet wonder in knowing that next week, the paintings will begin to disperse across the country and oceans to settle in their new homes.

And the myriad of small things I didn’t know I would learn until I was standing inside the of the experience itself.

I feel tired, proud, grateful and changed.

Thank you to everyone who came, looked, talked, collected, wrote to me, or simply stood with the work for a while.

I am a magpie for words that conjure strong visuals. This one, Chthonic (silent ch), felt like it had been waiting to be paired with this painting.

An Ancient Greek word, chthonic relates to what exists or dwells beneath the earth. It is often used in a mythological sense to refer to deities such as Persephone and Hecate - those who’ve crossed the threshold into the underworld.

Much like the literal nature of what exists beneath the physical surface of the earth being unknowable without excavation, I feel the same to be true of ourselves.

Without a willingness to explore which aspects of our character lie buried beneath the surface, we risk an existence lacking in wholeness.

A life half-inhabited.

There are countless layers of our psyche that rely upon each other for contrast - those that emit light and those that absorb darkness. One without the other will always make for a flatter, less intoxicating patina of self.

I am transfixed by those souls brave enough to journey to the depths of themselves, look at what lives there, and integrate what they find. They are rich and complex and I love their unwillingness to compromise just to make others more comfortable.

So this piece, Chthonic, is an honouring of those who walk through the world knowing their shadow is as inherent and valuable as the parts of themselves that live in the light.

(Update: now sold) ‘Clinamen’. I first came across this word (the title of this piece) many years ago in a book on Chaos Theory. The philosophy behind it has stayed with me, waiting for the right artwork to embody it.

A Latin word, it means an unpredictable swerve or inclination. And I’m drawn to the breadth of what it’s been used to describe.

From the mechanical - an ‘atomic swerve’ cited by ancient philosophers and poets which recognises that all physical matter in the universe, would never have formed without this random collision of atoms.

To the personal - explaining how human free will and spontaneity exist within a physical universe, breaking apart what could otherwise be a rigid and predetermined system.

And the creative - moments of wild, delightful surprises, spontaneous shifts towards fresh inspiration.

I think I love the word because I believe in what it says - that all growth relies upon movement. That what can appear in life as chaos also ultimately, creates.

“I’d rather be whole than good.” - Carl Jung. I came across this quote last year as I buried myself deep in understanding his concept of the shadow.

It’s stayed with me. In part because it feels so counterintuitive at first - the praise and validation we receive for being “good” feels safe. We’re accepted, loved even, albeit conditionally, for existing within the framework of what someone else - our familial system or society - has deemed “good”.

But I’ve come to believe that it is ultimately a false safety. Or at least, it is a limited and fragile one. Built upon an unspoken agreement of continuing to play the game of editing oneself, there is no real space for expansion beyond what is already approved of.

At some point that stifled version of self becomes suffocating.

It’s messy as hell, looking at all the aspects of being that we’ve learned are unworthy and shameful. And choosing to acknowledge and then embrace them within oneself feels threatening at a core level.

But, Jung argues, that as a human being each of us has the capacity to embody ALL the aspects of humanity. The beautiful and repulsive. The acceptable and degenerate.

That realisation seems to me to be both humbling and holy.

And it’s the place from which this new body of work was born.

BONE DEEP - opens this Saturday 2-4pm @galleryathome. Please join me there, all of you is welcome.

One week today - BONE DEEP, my inaugural solo exhibition opens. Often, when I finish an artwork, I feel ready to put it to one side - there’s a feeling of completeness that allows me to move on to the next canvas and step of inquiry.

This piece, ‘Initiation’ has been toying with me in a different way.

As a painting, it was resolved months ago, but I can’t stop returning to look at it. It’s still whispering to me from the studio wall; speaking differently depending on whether I glance briefly at it or we spend extended time together.

It has weather and moods. And I love that I can’t predict what they will be on any given day.

Painting it, it was one of those pieces that carried me along for the ride. It felt like my body was as much (if not more so) tool than director.

I’m genuinely curious to see how it behaves, and what it has to say, in a new environment. It’ll be shown @galleryathome this coming Saturday (12th September) alongside 15 new works, exploring the shadow aspects of self, and what is possible when we embrace the deep, rich, messy, complex wholeness of being human.

I hope you’ll join me to celebrate what has been a wild and profound journey to make this work.

If you haven’t received in invitation to the opening or can’t make it to the show and would like to see a preview catalogue of the work, DM me.
