Lesson Learnt …
(Too Many Years In The Making) …
‘The Horror Within’ …
Bram Stoker Festival IFI 26.10.24

I had been quite hesitant to share this particular piece ‘Lesson Learnt’ and the story behind it, having never spoken of it publicly before, but am so glad I did. Reading @seanchoiche ‘The Horror Within’ @bramstokerfestival @irishfilminstitute was incredible. Thank you for such a beautiful experience & for the opportunity to read to a room full of empathy, love and with such an appreciative audience🙏🤍

Lesson Learnt …

I can still feel the warm piss run down my legs.
My sudden relief turning to utter fear.
I am no longer in control of my body
Or of a situation not of my making.
Try and cry as I might
He would not listen.
And would rather humiliate a child
Than hear my worried cries.

The island I have now become
Surrounded by my own waters is inescapable.
No one can save me now.

I must continue to stand as I have at the top of the class, an exhibit on show.
A lesson to learn as Gaeilge.
“An bhuil cead agam dul go dti an leithreas, más é do thoil é?”
All these years later I still have the bladder of a camel; Lesson learnt.

A couple weeks ago we caught up with @_kim_irwin

Kim Irwin has self published a step by step guide for victims of sexual harassment in the workplace.
This is an important read and something we feel needs to be understood and mirrored on our dancefloors and cultural spaces too - check out part 1/2 of our interview.

Link to Kim’s Guide in our bio.
