We removed over 40 contractor bags worth of invasive plants and litter from the riverbanks of the Passaic River in Newark!

We also used proprietary @amaearthgroup technology to inform our work, conducting an environmental site assessment on the parcel to inform our strategy 🙌

Thanks to the 20+ volunteers and community organizers that took part in the event 🔥

Scenes from our first Newarkers for Accountable Development (NOFAD) session! We started off strong with a dive into who decides on what gets built in #newark, a discussion on how far the Average Median Income (AMI) is from providing truly affordable housing for our community, and created an imaginary city for our land use and zoning activity.

Thanks Great Spirit for allowing us to complete another community-led restoration project for the Pahsayèk River in New Jersey (traditional land of the Lenni-Lenape) 🌱

This is one of the most polluted rivers in the United States, however, we are part of a growing movement to restore and nurse this beautiful river back to optimal health ♻️

Our past few efforts for this river consisted of mostly invasive species removal. This time we did some maintenance, but we mostly focused on planting 30 native plants to help restore the native vegetation along the riverbank. We chose each plant strategically and split them into 2 layers. Layer 1 consisted of Broadleaf Cattail & Softstem Bulrush, plants that are experts at competing with invasive species, preventing erosion and purifying soil & water content. Layer 2 consisted of Secondary Support Species like Swamp Rose Mallow & Lakebank Sedge, plants that attract pollinators and improve water filtration 🌊

We also removed 1,000+ pieces of litter from the riverbank and helped educate the community about the history and state of the river 🤞🏽

Thanks to everyone who came out to volunteer, to our subscribers & donors that made this project possible, and to the community leaders who gave us the blessing to go forth. Finally, thanks to @keller.photographe for the incredible photos! 📸

Sharing a recap video for Project #7: Passaic River Day 🪘🌊

We uprooted a basketball court’s worth of invasive plants, installed native riverbank vegetation, and removed over 2,000 pieces of litter from the surrounding area 🫡

This was a deeply spiritual endeavor. We helped gather community members around the river, we called on our ancestors & we made sacred offerings to a river that is so often overlooked & mistreated. We look forward to seeing more attention/love being directed towards the Passaic River as we collectively work towards its full restoration 🌊

HUGE thanks to all 40 volunteers who worked hard to transform part of the river, to the community leaders that guided us @chozindesigns @queenmotherimakhu & Lenny Thomas, and to the organizations that helped make this event possible/successful @trustforpublicland @newarkcityparks @newarkriverfront @hackensackriverkeeper @waterfrontalliance @newarklibrary 🤞🏽

🎥 Thanks to @moneymick_ for capturing these moments & creating this recap video
