Jokers Wild game is the only game where the Alumni can play again.

Alumni were there at the beginning, and will be there at the end, just like the Jokers in every deck of cards. Hence the name.

This Saturday we play our annual game of cards at 1 pm @ Valhalla.

Next up in the #alumnispotlight is old ‘iron shins’ himself, @vosonick our brick wall of a Goalie.

Nick was born in Ft. Lewis, Washington and raised in the Atlanta suburbs. He started playing lacrosse in middle school and was eventually talked into trying goalie since “it was the same thing as playing catcher”. Despite starting high school in Georgia, he graduated from the Blue Ridge School in Virginia where he helped lead his team to the VISAA championship game. Nick graduated from Berry with a degree in Finance and was a Captain his senior year.

After graduation, Nick bounced around several jobs before settling in at McAngus Goudelocke & Courie as an Accounting Specialist. Nick has been living in Columbia, SC for the past few years but will be returning to Atlanta in November.

Nick was a beast in between the pipes and led us to an SAA Conference Championship appearance. He may have been soft spoken but he let his actions speak for themselves. We have a standard in our Program of 4 physical tests: bench body weight 10x, 10 pull ups, 25 dips, and 1.5 miles under 10 mins. At 285 it was impressive to see the big man in the weight room pass his 3 tests before telling me “Coach, I don’t want to do the run.” “Yes sir” I said. Nicky V pull up a chair! #seatatthetable

Super Freaks do well at Berry and Christian Akers (@cca16 ) was freaky enough to get 1st team all-SAA for us his Jr year.

Christian was born and raised in Roanoke, VA. Where he attended Roanoke catholic high school and played football, swam, and played Lacrosse. Christian won the state championship in lacrosse in 2009 while playing as a freshman and led the team in goals that year. During his Senior season as the quarterback of the Football team he set the record for most points scored in a game, 40 points.

At Berry, Christian majored in Exercise Science with a focus of pre-med and graduated with a BS. Akers worked in the cage center his freshmen year and then as one of the directors of the sports medicine department for the three other years. Christian was the VP of Athletes Bettering their community his junior year. He was a member of the BCIL (Berry College Integrity and Leadership program) his Junior and Senior years. Additionally, Christian was the Garland M. Dickey Scholarship recipient his senior year.

Christian now lives in Charlottesville, Virginia working for a medical device distributorship as a territory manager of central and southwest VA.

Christian was the 2nd Berry Lacrosse player in a row to earn 1st team All-SAA DMid. He is a freak athlete and could play anywhere on the field. He has one of the highest shooting percentages of all time and people feared dodging against him on the field. He is a FREAK athlete and will forever have a #seatatthetable

Today’s #alumnispotlight features @grantrphillips known for his timely sparks in big moments.

Grant Is from Winter Park, FL and attended Lake Highland Prep in Downtown Orlando. Grant and the Highlanders won the State Championship in 2011. Grant elected to attend Berry College and earned a degree from the Berry College Campbell School of Business.

During his time on campus, Grant worked in a number of on-campus jobs including dormitory trash man, and worked in the HVAC department. After graduation, Grant returned to the sunshine state and currently resides in Delray Beach, FL and lives with fellow Berry College men’s lacrosse 2015 graduate Clayton Mcglasson (@jcmii ). Grant currently works in real estate development for the nations largest privately owned telecommunications infrastructure company.

Grant was a big time player from a big time program and brought a certain swagger to the young Berry squad that demanded they hold themselves to a higher level of play. He had the heaviest shot that ever graced a Viking uniform and while not the ‘prolific scorer’, he had a knack for stepping up in big time moments for his team. Grant could get hands free and and score inside a telephone booth and will forever hold a #seatatthetable

#alumnispotlight ALERT!! @n_mayer23 is up next, aka the Dmid #ganggang godfather.

Nate Mayer grew up in Tampa Florida where he graduated from Palm Harbor University High School. Nate started his studies as a philosophy major, later graduating with a B.S. in Economics and a minor in Mathematics.

Nate started his collegiate lacrosse career as a close defenseman as a freshman, moved to LSM as a sophomore, but found his natural position as a short-stick defensive midfielder his Jr year, and earned first team all conference honors his Sr year.

After graduating from Berry, Nate worked in the finance industry for two years before serving in the United States Peace Corps in rural Zambia where he worked to increase economic capacity in rural communities through improved agricultural and business practices. Nate has recently returned to the United States and hopes to continue to work toward global economic freedom and equity.

Nate was the best athlete on the field and when he found his true calling as a DMid, he immediately became the best in the SAA, sparking a 3-yr run of Berry DMid’s earning the same distinctions. He was a clearing machine and I always felt sorry for the guy trying to dodge him. Nate is charismatic, outgoing, and playfully intense. Only freaks can run DMid and Nate was the freakiest. Grab a seat at the table anytime Nate!

Next up in the #alumnispotlight is Thomas Edgeworth (@tpeiii) who set the standard for all LSM’s to follow: take every shift until your legs fall off, play position but strip the ball, and one time every GB.

Tommy grew up in Chicago and then the Atlanta suburbs before being recruited by coach Del to Berry to play lacrosse. While at Berry he earned a marketing degree and was a two time SAA All Conference defensive player, as well as captain of the team.

After graduation Tommy landed a couple of jobs working in software sales before making a career change and going to a coding boot camp, DigitalCrafts, in Atlanta to learn how to code. Since then he has been working as a teaching assistant at that same boot camp where he teaches students how to go from 0 technical knowledge to full blown computer developers over the course of 16 weeks.

Tommy was the most fundamentally sound defensemen on the young Viking squad that went from startup to 2OT in the Conference Championship and would still have a starting role to this day. His Leadership was calm and collected but his actions spoke the loudest and has forever earned him a seat at the table.
