Im a bit lost for words. Someone who’s been a good friend and mentor to me has passed. As someone who’s always been an older brother but has never had one myself, it’s been hard at times for me to know how to be an older brother (well). Gary is someone who’s been a good example to me of how to be a “Kuya” for the last couple years, and I am grateful for that. This is a picture of him handing me my first “rank advancement” in Pekiti-Tirsia. It was the first time in years I felt accomplished in anything. Gary was not in my life for a very long time, but he left a big impact on me, and nourished my budding interest in martial arts into a passion that I will follow for life. He loved his family, his culture, and the great outdoors.

Thank you for helping me start to find The Way, Gary.

Your family and friends miss, and will miss you.

I am going to miss you, Coach Gary. We are devastated by your loss.

I started training in PTK-SMF with Coach Gary in 2020 over Zoom sessions, alongside my brother. I had attended a couple of in person sessions with one of his senior members, but never got a chance to train with Coach before the rest of 2020 happened. We met once and sometimes twice a week for months over Zoom and would talk about anything and everything.

My Sunday mornings since meeting in person have generally been with Coach Gary. He was a friend, a Mentor, a Kuya, a cousin. We would talk about martial arts, about life, about family, about being Filipino. We would train hard but laugh even harder. I could always reach out to him if I had something to ask and he would always do his best to answer.

His family was extremely important to him. He loved his wife, his son, and his daughter so much. He was an amazing father, amazing husband, an amazing human. He was so proud of his kids, and we bonded over how much our families meant to us, no matter what the circumstances of the day or week.

Being Filipino was also very important to him. He had just continued his sleeve tattoo he was getting from Mel and was so proud of it. We bonded over silly Filipino family stories and traits. Being Filipino was important, as was doing a Filipino Martial Art.

The last training session we had was the Sunday before he passed. We had just messaged back and forth about some funny reel on Instagram, and about how he wanted to bring me to a PTK camp with him. I only was able to train with and get to know Coach Gary for four years, but I am grateful for every moment.

My training from this point forward is not only to continue learning the system he loved so much, but also to carry on his legacy. I will do my best to make you proud, Coach.

This man, my love, my husband, my best friend, the father of our kids, my rock. He has left us too soon. To know him is to love him, he emanated such a strong love for his family.

Gary passed away Thursday night. It was tragic and sudden and way too soon. There is a huge hole in our hearts as we learn to navigate life without him. Please pray for my kids and my family. 💜

Pekiti tirsia is sword fighting. Sword fighting is not simply mindlessly swinging and chopping your blade in front of you hoping it lands on target. And it certainly isn’t standing in one spot in the pocket to see if you are quicker than your opponent.

Sword fighting takes skill of time, distance, angles and tactics. Far too many rely on just speed of their strike to reach a target. The truth is, a quicker fighter can easily be defeated by a skilled fighter using all of the previously mentioned factors.

A proper swordsman initiates the long range attack, controlling the bridge, closing the distance and putting him ahead of timing of his opponent who must attempt to fall back to make up that lost timing. Done so correctly, the attacker should be able to make contact minimizing his own risk of contact. That is a measure of true skill in the blade.

There is nothing more entertaining than to see two skilled swordsmen engage. It is a chess match that is only visible to those who know how that game of chess is played, others will simply see two men flailing blades about in front of them. But every strike is measured, timed and planned.

That is a swordsman. That is Pekiti Tirsia Kali.

Just received my ‘Start With Why’ book by @simonsinek 📕😁🙌🏽 Looking forward to this gift that I gave out to all my team members before breaking for the holidays as part of a book club series next year in 2024. We’re all looking forward to it and applying some of our learnings, takeaways and strategies together in the new year.

This year was a very successful, impactful and productive year at Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) - so proud of our user experience design team, PM, engineering, our leadership team, and cross-functional team partners in product, marketing, tech teams👊🏽💪🏽👍🏽

Leading a very talented team through challenges and transformation in an organization while also rolling up my sleeves to lead by example is not an easy task and is something I enjoy doing with great people that I also learn from and am always inspired by every day.

This year we launched a number of successful releases for investment solutions, data & technology, analytics, apps, real estate market solutions, ESG & climate features and indexing solutions for our clients! Kudos and cheers to what we achieved in 2023 and very excited and looking forward to more awesomeness in 2024!! 🙌🏽👏🏽🎉

Last weekend, Coach @gary_ptksmf hosted an instructor camp with @tuhontim . I was able to attend on the last day with my other teammates. Tuhon Tim discussed an understanding of martial arts concepts that he will be making more public soon. I have been able to utilize my understanding of Range/Distance, Timing, and Pattern Recognition I have gained from training in this system across the other martial arts I practice, and I have a lot of fun seeing how the concepts can apply. Such an amazing opportunity to be able to discuss martial arts, whatever they may be, through this updated doctrine. Always looking forward to learning and training more.

(Had to repost because I had to re-edit for clip length...if you want to see the full video, but without captions, see my Feed)

Here is video from Saturday of my friend, and training partner, Lauren and I doing some positional sparring. We weren't going wild so we could really think through our sequences. I've added captions to the video to show you my thought process.

I recently began re-prioritizing my jiujitsu training since beginning to teach at De La Soul. Many instructors/coaches can probably relate to the struggle in finding the balance between teaching and training themselves. It's become more complicated since I'm also committed to train Muay Thai and Pekiti Tirsia Kali. Being tri-martial-arts-ual is a lot, but I love them all, and I'm able to apply tactics and concepts across the board. For example, today during PTK training, Coach Gary showed me ways to use my jiujitsu and grappling while defending against a knife. I called it "knife-jitsu", and it is actually part of the curriculum we follow. I'm looking forward to learning more dumog, which is what grappling in many FMAs is called.

Huge thanks to Coach Alberto for welcoming me at Daruma Dojo and for the awesome training. It's fun rolling with and learning from someone whose style is so similar to my own. And thanks for taking this video! I haven't seen myself roll in a while and it's always an adventure seeing what I was doing.

I have so much to learn and work on, and that's the awesome about this jiujitsu life.

Looking forward to training with my buddy Aubrey again.
