“Working on one project for five years is a commitment, as a set designer you tend to concentrate on one project for about two weeks, design, build, shoot, move on to the next. When starting ‘Fairyland’ with Tim I had no idea how huge the project would become.  Around the beginning of 2020, Tim called me in for a meeting to discuss a new exhibition idea he was thinking about, he’d had huge success the previous year with a retrospective project at the V&A. This time, he wanted to focus on a project beyond the confines of his previous editorial work, making a series of shoots exploring a subject very dear to our hearts – queer culture, self expression, and pride. Sometimes the shoots discussed queer erotica, sometime queer history and the tragedy of the Aids epidemic. Some were poignant, some were hilarious, pretty much all of them were camp as fuck. Through the lockdown of 2020, we set about creating a series of shoots, readjusting to the weirdness of social distancing whilst sometimes doing the most awkward of tasks, smothering male models in whipped cream springs to mind. Each project was completely unique, exploring a different facet of queer culture, and so it went for five years, working together intensely, hotly off the heels of a big commercial job we’d set to work on a new queer story.  So, it was with a lot of excitement and a bit of trepidation that I walked through those giant NGP doors last night, wondering what had made the cut. In the end, Tim produced about 50 projects to bring this important story together, I worked on 15 of them. Countless incredible images were made so I knew the editing process would have to be ruthless. What of all those brilliant moments were left on the cutting room floor? I needn’t have worried, when I was enveloped in the complete body of work all concerns fell away, I was left with a sense of overwhelming pride, knowing that I was part of something significant, so much bigger than just my contribution, it’s a show about community, not only the wonderful queer figures we covered over but also the amazing people Tim pulled together to bring this show to life.” @garycard @timwalker @vamuseum

We understand the value of new experiences for fresh inspiration, so for this year’s conference season, we sent the MAD team out to a few 🤩🤩🤩 Here are the reviews (pt. 3/3): Us by Night Antwerp with Joanne, Ben, and Carla: ”It was very refreshing to see not only hear from other designers/agencies, but listen to how artists, directors, producers approach their work from unexpected angles and reach certain depths. Some of our highlights of the weekend were: @wangsoderstrom @jonacthan @zach.lieberman @100prcnt.film @studiodumbar @garycard @sabine_marcelis @mouthwash.studio Discussions around changes in the design industry was a sobering truth to hear, but it was great to scribble down drunken hopes while in an arena for play, food, and drinks with some friends. Thank you to UBN and to the speakers!”

@usbynightfest seen through a glass of water the morning after. @garycard put a lime on a giant screen and warned the whole room his work is not for everyone. Neither is mine, and I left Antwerp more sure of it. As usual, between talks I found art in the everyday, like these folding chairs lined up. And to stay true to the concept of reflections, I found this sculpture of glasses. And of course my person who pushes me out of my atelier. Which slide would you frame? #usbynight #antwerpdesign #designfestival

Our dear friend David Wilson (@hidavidwilson) gave us one of the most epic closing-night keynotes / cabaret shows in Us By Night history back in 2024. ❤️ This year, he was coming back simply as a visitor, partly to see one of his idols, Gary Card (@garycard), and partly to share some of his beautiful handmade animations with us. Then we had a last-minute cancellation. So… we asked David if he’d be up for doing a talk again. With basically no preparation time. 😬 But if you know David, you know he never shies away from a challenge. Of course he said yes. David is also part of our Meta Smart Glasses project, sharing little pieces of his world for our Through Their Eyes page on our website. And this morning, he sent us this movie. Too much love for this dude.❤️❤️❤️ DAVID WILSON. TONIGHT. US BY NIGHT. 🔥
